 2026 Preview 


       Gordo completed the 2025 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Gordo captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-1 record. Gordo lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Piedmont team by a score of 28-20.

       The high-scoring Gordo offense ranked 18th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.9 points a game.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Gordo has gone a combined 168-35. Their 82.8% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 2A over the past sixteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Gordo has finished a combined 246-69. Their 78.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 2A and 9th in the AHSAA. The Green Wave have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1992.

Head Coach:
       The Green Wave are led by head coach Chris Chambless who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 10-2 record in his first season at Gordo. Under his direction the Green Wave have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Chambless. The win total includes 10 wins in Alabama and 208 victories from outside the state.

Season Outlook:

       The Gordo Green Wave will play in Class 2A region five during the 2026 season.

      

       Four consecutive ten win seasons, eleven in the past twelve seasons is something to brag about in Gordo. But it's not what the coaches and players want honestly. They want a Blue Map for the trophy case.

    While most teams rebuild during the off season, Gordo has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season.     The Green Wave are considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Green Wave have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

Season Opener:
       The Green Wave open the 2026 season at home against non-region opponent Fayette County on Friday, August 21 at Green Wave Stadium. Last year the Fayette County Tigers finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 4A region five. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Alexandria by a score of 47-20.

       Gordo and Fayette County have met a total of 80 times on the football field. The Green Wave have a 36-42-2 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2025 with Gordo winning by a score of 34-28.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
