2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Austin completed the 2021 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Austin just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 7A region four with a 3-4 region record. Austin took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2014. The Black Bears lost as many games as in any season since 2014. Since 2010, Austin has gone a combined 83-53. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 7A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Austin has managed to compile a record of 140-134. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 7A and 182nd in the AHSAA. The Black Bears are led by head coach Jeremy Perkins who is entering his thirteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 83-53 over the past twelve seasons at Austin. Under his direction the Black Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Perkins. Coach Perkins' overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 83-53 (61.0%). The Austin Black Bears will play in Class 7A region four during the 2022 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Black Bears could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season. Austin came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Black Bears open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Hartselle on Friday, August 19 at J.P. Cain Stadium. Last year the Hartselle Tigers finished with an overall record of 10-1 and in first place in Class 6A region eight. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Gardendale by a score of 35-28. Austin and Hartselle have met a total of 58 times on the football field. The Black Bears have a 25-32-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2021 with Hartselle winning by a score of 29-0. Austin returns 7A All-State athlete Maurice Jones. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
