 2023 Preview 


       Ragland completed the 2022 season with a 6-5 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region six, the Purple Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Ragland's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Marion County by a score of 59-22.

       Since 2010, Ragland has gone a combined 97-52. Their 65.1% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Ragland has managed to compile a record of 188-98. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 1A and 59th in the AHSAA.




       The Purple Devils are led by head coach Wes Tidwell who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-8 over the past two seasons at Ragland. Under his direction the Purple Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Tidwell. Over the course of his career, Coach Tidwell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times . The Purple Devils have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 59-49 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 1A and 94th in the AHSAA.

       The Purple Devils should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

      Junior QB Drake Kay will be returning after completing 58 of 121 passes for 1,122 yards last season along with 10 touchdowns.

       The Purple Devils open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Vincent on Friday, August 25 at Joan Ford Field. Last year the Vincent Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 2A region four. The Yellow Jackets lost in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs to Clarke County by a score of 43-28.

       Ragland and Vincent have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Purple Devils have a 3-5-0 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2022 with Vincent winning by a score of 41-26.

       Ragland lost 1A All-State  receiver Jordan Turner to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

       The Purple Devils return 1A All-State Senior linebacker Ethan Courtney. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
