 2018 Preview 


       Calera completed the 2017 season with a 7-5 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region three, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Calera reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Beauregard by a score of 30-17.

       The Eagles lost as many games as in any season since 2011.

       Since 2010, Calera has gone a combined 60-31. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Calera has managed to compile a record of 159-106. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 6A and 94th in the AHSAA.




       The Eagles are led by head coach Andrew Zow who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-9 over the past two seasons at Calera. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Zow.

       Coach Zow's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 28-38 (42.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Zow's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

       The Calera Eagles will play in Class 6A region three during the 2018 season. The Eagles move up in classification to Class 6A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

       Region three will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Eagles should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2011 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2018.

       The Eagles open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Pelham on Friday, August 24 at Ricky M. Cairns Memorial Stadium. Last year the Pelham Panthers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 6A region three. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Spanish Fort by a score of 49-14.

       Calera and Pelham have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 3-7-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 1985 with Pelham winning by a score of 35-14.

       Calera returns 5A All-State  quarterback Cornelius Brown. He was named to the second team last season. The Eagles also return  offensive lineman Jayson Jones. He was named to the first team. The Eagles also return  defensive back Trent Yowe. He was named to the second team. The Eagles also return  kicker Zach Ford. He was named to the honorable mention team.
