Tanner completed the 2016 season with a 9-4 record. Last year Tanner captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Tanner lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Lanett team by a score of 48-42. The Rattlers lost as many games as in any season since 2007. The Rattlers had some tough luck last season as three of their four losses were by less than eight points. The high-scoring Tanner offense ranked 29th in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.3 points a game. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Tanner has gone a combined 82-11. Their 88.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 2A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Tanner has gone a combined 217-92. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 2A and 30th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2001. In fourteen seasons at Tanner, Laron White won 148 games and a couple of state championships. His teams at Tanner went 91-6 in Region play and 29-12 in the post seasons. Every one of his teams qualified for the playoffs. Maurice Belser takes over the football program at Tanner for the upcoming season. He steps into a quality program that has a winning tradition. Belser has previously been a head coach at Aliceville (2002-03) and Hillcrest Evergreen (2006-09) with a record of 25-38. He is a 1991 graduate of Cordova and a member of the Alabama 1992 championship team. Coach Belser's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 25-38 (39.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Belser's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Tanner Rattlers will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2017 season. The Rattlers enter the 2017 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak. They have won 6 straight games on their home turf at Rip Swanner Stadium. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Tanner has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Rattlers should be considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Rattlers have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2001 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Rattlers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent West Limestone on Friday, August 25 at Rip Swanner Stadium. Last year the West Limestone Wildcats finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 4A region eight.
