 2017 Preview 


       Citronelle completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region one, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Citronelle's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Carroll by a score of 35-21.

       The Wildcats won as many games as in any season since 2008. The 364 points scored by the Wildcats last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2008 season that the Wildcats qualified for the playoffs.

       Since 2010, Citronelle has gone a combined 24-47. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Citronelle has managed to compile a record of 134-145. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 5A and 210th in the AHSAA.

       The Wildcats are led by head coach Russell Funk who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-13 over the past two seasons at Citronelle. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Funk.

       Coach Funk's overall record as a head football coach in nine season stands at 63-43 (59.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Funk's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won four region championships. Coach Funk won a state championship at in 2011.

       The Citronelle Wildcats will play in Class 5A region one during the 2017 season.

       The Wildcats will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season.

       The Wildcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent B.C. Rain on Friday, September 1 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the B.C. Rain Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 6A region one. The Red Raiders closed out the regular season with a loss to Saraland by a score of 62-26.

       Citronelle and B.C. Rain have met a total of 23 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 10-13-0 record against the Red Raiders. They last met in 2007 with Citronelle winning by a score of 28-0.

       Citronelle returns 5A All-State Senior defensive back Jonathon Orso. He was named to the second team last season.

Bart Starr received coaching from Kentucky great Babe Parilli his senior season at Sidney Lanier in hopes of joining Bear Bryant at Kentucky. He had to settle for Alabama.
