2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Williamson finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Williamson just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region one with a 2-4 region record. Williamson was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.4 points a game. Since 2010, the Williamson football program has struggled with a record of 20-51. Over the past 25 seasons, Williamson has managed to compile a record of 146-136. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 5A and 174th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2008. The Lions are led by head coach Dedrick Sumpter who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 13-38 over the past five seasons at Williamson. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sumpter. Coach Sumpter's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 15-54 (21.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Sumpter's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Williamson Lions will play in Class 5A region one during the 2017 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Lions could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Williamson came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Lions open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent LeFlore on Thursday, August 24 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Last year the LeFlore Rattlers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 6A region one. The Rattlers closed out the regular season with a loss to Spanish Fort by a score of 25-6. Williamson and LeFlore have met a total of 56 times on the football field. The Lions have a 35-20-1 record against the Rattlers. They last met in 2016 with LeFlore winning by a score of 20-14. Williamson returns 5A All-State Senior linebacker Jamal Hickbottom. He was named to the second team last season. College prospects include: Jamall Hickbottom (, 0) inside linebacker, Roger McCreary (, 0) safety, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
