 2016 Preview

Southside finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Southside finished seventh in Class 4A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Panthers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2005 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 2003 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Southside struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 42.0 points a game.

Since 2010, the Southside football program has struggled with a record of 14-46.

Over the past 25 seasons, Southside has not won much with a record of 82-170. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 3A and 336th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2009.

The Panthers are led by head coach Daniel Flowers who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-30 over the past four seasons at Southside. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Flowers.

Coach Flowers' overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 10-30 (25.0%).

The Southside Panthers will play in Class 3A region three during the 2016 season. The Panthers may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region three this year.

This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region three.

The Panthers open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Selma on Friday, August 26 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Selma Saints finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 6A region four. The Saints ended last season on a positive note with a win over Ellwood Christian by a score of 46-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Southside and Selma have met a total of 36 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 6-30-0 record against the Saints. They last met in 2015 with Selma winning by a score of 35-26.

Southside returns 4A All-State Senior receiver DeQuan Johnson. He was named to the first team last season.
