2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ragland finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region five, the Purple Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Ragland's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cedar Bluff by a score of 47-26. Ragland took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2009. The Purple Devils lost as many games as in any season since 1996. The Purple Devils hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 11-2 record in 2014. Ragland was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Purple Devils want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.2 points a game. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Ragland has gone a combined 55-17. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 1A over the past six seasons. Over the past 24 seasons, Ragland has managed to compile a record of 160-109. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 1A and 90th in the AHSAA. Michael Hathorn will not return after only one season as the head football coach at Ragland. The St. Clair Board of Education decided not to renew his contract after a 3-8 season. Brian Alred takes over the football program at Ragland for the 2016 season. He served as the defensive coordinator under head coach Jonathan Nix. The Ragland Purple Devils will play in Class 1A region four during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Purple Devils remain in 1A but move from region five over to region four. The Purple Devils have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 42-60 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 1A and 8th in the AHSAA. The Purple Devils will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region four this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2016. The Purple Devils open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Maplesville on Friday, August 19 at Joan Ford Stadium. Last year the Maplesville Red Devils finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 1A region four. The Red Devils won the Class 1A State Championship last season when they defeated Cedar Bluff by a score of 59-24 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. This will be the second meeting between Ragland and Maplesville on the football field. The Purple Devils have a 0-1-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2015 with Maplesville winning by a score of 54-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
