 2016 Preview

Luverne completed the 2015 season with a 6-5 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 2A region three, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Luverne's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Mobile Christian by a score of 43-19.

The defense allowed a team record 290 points last season.

Since 2010, Luverne has gone a combined 44-25. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 2A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Luverne has gone a combined 208-101. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 2A and 45th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.

The Tigers are led by head coach Scott Rials who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-5 record in his first season at Luverne. The Tigers saw improvement from a 5-6 record the season before coach Rials arrived. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Rials.

Coach Rials' overall record as a head football coach in eighteen season stands at 130-74 (63.7%). His 130 wins rank 34th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Rials' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times and won four region championships. Coach Rials won a state championship at Elba in 2011.

The Luverne Tigers will play in Class 2A region three during the 2016 season.

The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 1982 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2016.

The Tigers hope to extend their consecutive playoff appearances streak to 34 seasons in 2016.

The Tigers open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Highland Home on Friday, August 26 at Glenn Daniel Stadium. Last year the Highland Home Flying Squadron finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 2A region three. The Flying Squadron closed out the regular season with a loss to Georgiana by a score of 42-8.

Luverne and Highland Home have met a total of 83 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 65-15-3 record against the Flying Squadron. They last met in 2015 with Luverne winning by a score of 53-18.

Luverne returns 2A All-State Junior offensive lineman Tyler Harris. He was named to the first team last season.
