2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kinston completed the 2015 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region two, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Kinston's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Maplesville by a score of 49-12. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1987 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Kinston was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.1 points a game. Since 2010, Kinston has gone a combined 30-36. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 1A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Kinston has not won much with a record of 75-183. Their 29.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 1A and 352nd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. Jason Wambles leaves Kinston after seven seasons with a 32-44 record on the football field. His last six teams reached the playoffs but none were able to win a post season game. Wambles took the head coaching job at Excel during the off season. Jonny Mitchell was promoted in June to the head football coaching position at Kinston. Mitchell served as the offensive coordinator last season at Kinston. The Kinston Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region two during the 2016 season. The Bulldogs will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2016. The Bulldogs open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent St. Lukes on Friday, August 26 at Kinston Stadium. Last year the St. Lukes Wildcats finished with an overall record of 2-7 and in eighth place in Class 2A region one. The Wildcats ended last season on a positive note with a win over Cottage Hill Christian by a score of 53-50 after failing to gain a playoff spot. This will be the second meeting between Kinston and St. Lukes on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 0-1-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in with Kinston returns 1A All-State Senior defensive back Alex Turner. He was named to the second team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
