2016 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
G.W. Long completed the 2015 season with a 12-1 record. The Rebels cruised through the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record going into the post season. Last year G.W. Long captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. G.W. Long made a nice playoff run in 2015, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Elba team by the score of 24-7. The Rebels won as many games as in any season since 1999. The high-scoring G.W. Long offense ranked 7th in the AHSAA. They averaged 43.2 points a game. The Rebels defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 8th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 10.0 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Rebels have gone 23-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, G.W. Long has gone a combined 57-14. Their 80.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 2A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, G.W. Long has managed to compile a record of 154-120. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 2A and 120th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2010. The Rebels are led by head coach Scott Horne who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 62-19 over the past seven seasons at G.W. Long. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Horne. Coach Horne's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 62-19 (76.5%). The G.W. Long Rebels will play in Class 2A region two during the 2016 season. The Rebels enter the 2016 season having won 19 straight region games. While most teams rebuild during the off season, G.W. Long has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Rebels should be considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Rebels are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Rebels have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Rebels open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Dale County on Friday, August 26 at Warrior Stadium. Last year the Dale County Warriors finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 3A region two. G.W. Long and Dale County have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 7-8-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2011 with G.W. Long winning by a score of 41-12. G.W. Long returns 2A All-State Senior athlete Garrett Sanders. He was named to the first team last season. College prospects include: Garrett Sanders (5-5, 147) receiver, | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
