2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cottonwood finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Cottonwood finished sixth in Class 2A region two with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Cottonwood took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2011. The Bears hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 9-3 record in 2014. Since 2010, Cottonwood has gone a combined 36-30. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 2A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cottonwood has managed to compile a record of 163-124. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 2A and 109th in the AHSAA. Toby Greene leaves Cottonwood after nine seasons leading the football program. His teams finished a combined 60-39 and 5-4 in the playoffs. The 2007 team went 12-1 and won a region championship before falling in the third round of the playoffs. His 2010 squad mated that feat. Overall Coach Green is 96-86 in 18 seasons at Rehobeth, Muscle Shoals, Geneva County and Cottonwood. John Gilmore has spent the past 18 seasons as an assistant coach at Eufaula and will become the newest head football coach and athletic director at Cottonwood. Gilmore is a 1989 graduate of Eufaula and has worked as an assistant at Headland (1996-97) and Carroll (1997-98) prior to returning to Eufaula. Coach Gilmore's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 24-23 (51.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gilmore's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Cottonwood Bears will play in Class 2A region two during the 2016 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Bears if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. The Bears open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Houston County on Friday, August 19 at L.F. Tillery Field. Last year the Houston County Lions finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 2A region two. Cottonwood and Houston County have met a total of 84 times on the football field. The Bears have a 51-29-4 record against the Lions. They last met in 2015 with Cottonwood winning by a score of 46-19. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
