Kinston completed the 2021 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-2 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region one, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Kinston reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Sweet Water by a score of 54-7. The Bulldogs improved in 2021 with their first winning season since 2017. No team at Kinston ever won more games in a season than the eight victories last year. It marked the first time since the 2015 season that the Bulldogs qualified for the playoffs. The Bulldogs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Free saw improvement as they won eight games following a 2-7 record in 2020. Since 2010, Kinston has gone a combined 51-76. Their 40.2% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Kinston has not won much with a record of 79-178. Their 31.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 1A and 343rd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Rudy Free who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 13-18 over the past three seasons at Kinston. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Free. Coach Free's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 20-41 (32.8%). Over the course of his career, Coach Free's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Kinston Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region two during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 1A but move from region one over to region two. Kinston enters the 2022 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Kinston Stadium. The Bulldogs will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season. The Bulldogs open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Samson on Friday, August 19 at Kinston Stadium. Last year the Samson Tigers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 1A region one. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Linden by a score of 20-12. Kinston and Samson have met a total of 43 times on the football field.
