 2022 Preview

Hueytown completed the 2021 season with a 13-2 record. Last year Hueytown captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Golden Gophers won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 6A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Clay-Chalkville at the Alabama Super Seven 46-42 in Birmingham.

No team at Hueytown ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2011. The 784 points scored by the Golden Gophers last year were a team record in a single season. The defense allowed a team record 348 points last season. The Golden Gophers hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Patterson. saw improvement as they won thirteen games following a 5-6 record in 2020.

The high-scoring Hueytown offense ranked 1st in the AHSAA. They averaged 52.3 points a game.

Since 2010, Hueytown has gone a combined 91-50. Their 64.5% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Hueytown has managed to compile a record of 144-133. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 6A and 169th in the AHSAA.

The Golden Gophers are led by head coach Greg Patterson. who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 29-10 over the past three seasons at Hueytown. Under his direction the Golden Gophers have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Patterson..

Coach Patterson.'s overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 43-36 (54.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Patterson.'s teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won three region championships.

The best season in Hueytown history remains a disappointment in ways knowing they were so very close to their first ever state championship. Behind all everything quarterback Earl Woods the Golden Gophers expect nothing less than a return visit to the title game in 2022.

The Hueytown Golden Gophers will play in Class 6A region four during the 2022 season.

The Golden Gophers enter the 2022 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak. Hueytown has won 11 consecutive region games. They have won 8 straight games on their home turf at Hueytown High School Stadium.

The Golden Gophers enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region four and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 6A Super Seven come December. The Golden Gophers have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2015 and this year should be no exception.

The Golden Gophers open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Ramsay on Friday, August 19 at Lawson Field. Last year the Ramsay Rams finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 5A region five. The Rams lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Center Point by a score of 9-0.

Hueytown and Ramsay have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Golden Gophers have a 3-6-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2017 with Ramsay winning by a score of 26-10.

Hueytown returns 6A All-State Senior athlete Earl Woods. He was named to the first team last season.
