Semifinals of the 2021 Playoffs

The teams are set for the 2021 Super Seven State Championship games beginning December 1st in Birmingham.

   *   Here is a list of the Super Seven participants and the last time they played in a state championship game.
         7A Wednesday 7pm - Central Phenix City (2019) - Thompson (2020)
         6A Friday 7pm - Hueytown (Never) - Clay-Chalkville (2015)
         5A Thursday 7pm - Pike Road (Never) - Pleasant Grove (2020)
         4A Friday 11am - Vigor (2018) - Oneonta (2013)
         3A Thursday 11am - Montgomery Academy (1987) - Piedmont (2019)
2A Friday 3pm - Clarke County (Never) - Cleveland (Never)
         1A Thursday 3pm - Sweet Water (2017) - Wadley (Never)

   *   Previews of every game for the AHSAA Super Seven will be available Sunday.

   *   The number of undefeated teams dropped this week as Brantley lost to Sweet Water in a matchup of undefeated teams. The remaining undefeated teams:
           7A - Central Phenix City 13-0
           6A - Clay-Chalkville 14-0
           5A - Pike Road 13-0
           1A - Sweet Water 13-0
           AISA - Autauga Academy 12-0

   *   Upsets ruled the Friday night action in the semifinals. Well I guess it is all in who you thought were the favorites. By the time the semifinals roll around every team is deserving of a win having surviving the first three rounds of the playoffs.

   *   Thompson will be the only team defending their title from last season. The Warriors will be going for the coveted three peat against Central Phenix City on Wednesday night.

   *   Five teams will have a shot at their first ever championship. In Class 2A and 5A we are assured of first time champions.

   *   The biggest surprise had to be Montgomery Academy holding off Catholic Montgomery 10-7. I doubt many fans saw that one coming after Catholic had beat M.A. 42-0 earlier this season. The Eagles won their only other title game appearance in 1987 against Billingsley.

   *   Wadley knocking off Pickens County 41-36 was another surprise. It will be Wadley's first trip to the finals.

   *   Clarke County held off Highland Home 42-21 to reach the championship game for the first time in school history.

   *   Hueytown has been on a tear since an early season loss to Clay-Chalkville. I think I have written that same line many weeks in a row now. The Golden Gophers (13-1) beat Hillcrest Tuscaloosa 44-16 and have scored a total of 742 points in fourteen games. They scored 40 or more points in all but one of those games. The state record for points scored in a season belongs to Linden (2016) with 764.

   *   Hueytown takes on Clay-Chalkville in the 6A title game, a team they lost to 57-40 in week two. This will also be Hueytown's first trip to a championship game. I just hope the scoreboard at Protective Stadium holds up for this game.

   *   Cleveland surprised Mars Hill 21-14 for their first ever semifinal victory and a chance to advance to the Super Seven for the first time.

   *   The Pike Road Patriots shutout Andalusia 33-0 and will play Pleasant Grove on Thursday. This will be the Patriot's first trip but the third in a row for Pleasant Grove.

   *   Piedmont and Saks played one for the ages. Piedmont prevailed 52-44 in overtime to advance to the Super Seven for the sixth time. The Bulldogs won titles in 2009, 2016, 2016 and 2019.

   *   The Vigor Wolves defeated Jackson 42-21 to become the first team to play in a championship game in five consecutive decades. The Wolves won titles in 1987, 1988 and 2008. They lost in title games in 1998, 2011 and 2018.

   *   Oneonta beat Madison Academy 28-24 to advance to the Super Seven for the first time since 2013 when they claimed their last of three titles. The Redskins are 3-5 in championship games.

   *   Sweet Water held off a very good Brantley team 21-18. The Bulldogs have won ten state championships the most recent in 2017.

   *   Six teams participating in the Super Seven have never won a playoff title.

   *   Clarke County (12-2), Cleveland (12-2), Hueytown (13-1) and Wadley (13-1) have all tied school records for the most victories in a season. Pike Road (13-0) has already surpassed the record.

   *   The other teams who have won a playoff state championship along with their last title; Montgomery Academy (1987), Vigor (2008), Oneonta (2013), Sweet Water (2017), Clay-Chalkville (2015), Central Phenix City (2018), Piedmont (2019), Thompson (2020).

   *   Clay-Chalkville has the state's longest winning streak at fourteen games this week.

   *   Safe travels to all the fans heading to Birmingham this week. I hope the weather holds out and the games are great. Good luck to all the teams as they try to win a state championship for their hometowns.
