Week Eleven

The regular season is over and now on to the playoffs. Here are a few tidbits and notes from this week's action.

   *   I will post a regular season review and playoff preview for the Tidbits & Records Sunday. Look for it.

   *   We will be having our second "Pick the Super Seven Teams" in the forums starting Sunday. Come join the fun.

   *   Previews of every playoff game will be available by Sunday also.

   *   Most teams took a break after completing region play to setup a few nice matchups across classifications this weekend. Key games included; Madison Academy (4A) 34-20 over Russellville (5A). A matchup of undefeated teams saw Brooks (4A) defeat Lauderdale County (3A) 25-16. Alexandria (5A) beat Piedmont (3A) 25-20. UMS-Wright (5A) shutout undefeated Helena (6A) 31-0. American Christian (4A) outscored Mars Hill (2A) 55-36.

   *   Have you noticed Hueytown has been on a tear since an early season loss to Clay-Chalkville? The Golden Gophers beat Spain Park 58-21 and have scored a total of 553 points in ten games. They scored 50 or more points in all but two of those games. Hueytown takes on Eufaula next week in the first round of the playoffs at home.

   *   Only one forfeit this week as Carver Birmingham handed Bullock County a victory.

   *   Other schools saw their post seasons evaporate due to self reported rules violations. Leroy forfeited five games and was eliminated from the playoffs. St. Luke's forfeited four contests and will not make the playoffs. Sidney Lanier will forfeit six games and miss the playoffs. Anniston forfeited two early season games but will still qualify for a playoff spot as the number four team in region four.

   *   Alabama is 38-39 against out-of-state competition in 2021. That includes 11-11 against Georgia, 8-10 against Florida, 10-5 against Tennessee but 7-13 against Mississippi. One note is that these records include the 6 man and 8 man football schools.

   *   James Clemens and Spring Garden wrapped up undefeated seasons for the first time in their history.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 242 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs host Sparkman in the first round of the playoffs..

   * A total of ten teams are tied at the top with ten consecutive victories. Central Phenix City, Clay-Chalkville, Alexandria, Brooks, Spring Garden, Catholic Montgomery, Hartselle, Hoover, James Clemens, Winfield and Autauga Academy have finished the regular season undefeated.

   *   Columbia is in the middle of a sixty-two game losing streak. The Eagles closed out their sixth consecutive 0-10 football season.

   *   Lanett has won 33 straight region games and will look to extend that streak next season.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 56 consecutive region games. The Lions will be looking to end this streak next year.

   *   Pike Road has the longest regular season winning streak at 29 games following a 41-6 beating of B.T. Washington.

   *   Fyffe has put together a string of 53 consecutive home wins. The Red Devils defeated Scottsboro 45-7 on Friday. The Red Devils host Walter Wellborn in the first round next week.

   *   Guntersville, a 49-28 winner over Albertville, holds the longest road winning streaks now at twelve games.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 288 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
