AHSFHS.org Report
(Aug. 28, 2021)

Week Two

The 2021 season kicked off the second week of football action on Thursday night and a full slate of games played Friday night. Here are a few tidbits entering the season.

   *  The 2021 season rolls along into the second week despite more weather delays, cancellations and forfeits. The Northridge defeated Central Tuscaloosa 35-16 in a game that was moved to 10am Saturday and wrapped up this week's action. Region play starts next week for most teams so the games begin to mean a little more as each week passes.

   *  Thirteen games were forfeited due to the virus situation at the following schools. At least four schools have not played a single game since the 2019 season. Choctaw County, Sumter Central, Barbour County and Southern Choctaw have struggled to get going this season. Three other games were cancelled this week including Bullock County vs. Central Hayneville, Brindlee Mountain vs. Douglas and lastly Luverne vs. Brantley.

Abbeville Christian forfeits to Chambers Academy
Sumter Central forfeits to Choctaw County
Victory Christian forfeits to Horseshoe Bend
    Southern Choctaw forfeits to Leroy
    Wenonah forfeits to Midfield
    Columbia forfeits to New Hope
Crenshaw Christian forfeits to Pike Liberal Arts
Ellwood Christian forfeits to Prattville Christian
Barbour County forfeits to Russell County
Alabama School Deaf forfeits to Shoals Christian
    Lincoln forfeits to Sylacauga
Phillips Bear Creek forfeits to Tharptown
Good Hope forfeits to West Point

   *   While it is very rare it has happened a few times previously. Brothers have coached against each other a few times over the years and we can add another set to that list. Chris Hammon's Section squad defeated his brother's team over at Valley Head by a score of 34-14. Charles Hammon returned to Valley Head as the head coach this year after serving as the head coach from 2001-2004. Coach Chris Hammon has been the head coach at Section the past two seasons.

   *   Thompson matched last week's scoring mark by defeating Sparkman 55-0. Hoover, not to be outdone swamped a Georgia team for the second week in a row as they crushed Alpharetta 35-7 in their home opener. Those two teams play each other October 22.

   *   The 700 win watch. Fayette County lost 31-12 to Bibb County and will once again be after their 700th victory in two weeks at Curry. The Tigers have an open date this week. I will go out on a limb here and say they will defeat Curry and pick up that elusive 700th victory in two weeks. The T.R. Miller Tigers defeated Escambia County 36-6 and are actually tied with Fayette County at 699 all-time wins. The Tigers host Cottage Hill Christian in a region game next Friday night.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 233 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *   Two Number One teams were idle this week as Fyffe and Brantley took the week off. The only top team to lose was 2A Lanett who fell to 6A Valley 14-8.

   *   Fyffe with a string of forty-six consecutive victories after kicking off the 2021 football season last week was idle this weekend. The Red Devils have a shot at the all-time record for the longest winning streak in Alabama if they can put together another ten wins during the regular season. Clay County won 55 straight games between 1994-1997.

   *   Columbia with fifty-four game losing streak lands in the top spot this week after forfeiting their game with New Hope over the weekend.

   *   Fyffe has a streak of 39 consecutive region wins with no signs of slowing down this year. The Red Devils open region play against Collinsville on Sept. 3rd.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 50 consecutive region games and will begin a quest to break that streak against Sylvania on Sept 3rd also.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils have won 59 straight regular season games. That already is the state record.

   *   Fyffe also entered the 2021 season with a string of 49 consecutive home wins. Their next contest against Collinsville will be on their home turf.

   *   Fyffe also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 17 consecutive road games following their latest road victory against Isabella.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 280 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Congratulation to head coach Phillip Rivers as the St. Micheal Cardinals shutout McIntosh 49-0 for his first career victory. His father won 152 games at Pelham, Decatur and Athens. Rivers retired after seventeen seasons in the NFL with the Colts and Chargers.

   *   Coach Bob Godsey at Madison Academy has won 199 games over the past twenty-four seasons at Brook, Hartselle and Madison Academy. He will shooting for win number 200 next week at D.A.R. The Mustangs swamped Scottsboro 42-7.

   *   Head football coach Pat Prestridge at Randolph County picked up the 150th victory of his twenty year career at Oakman and Randolph County. His team defeated Woodland for the landmark win. His overall record stands at 150-75. The Tigers outscored Woodland on Friday night.

   *   Luverne's game against Brantley was cancelled so the Tigers remain at 599 wins in school history. Next week they can join the 600 win club if they can knock off Central Coosa as the open region play.

   *   Cordova also has amassed 599 victories since first fielding a football team back in 1925. The Blue Devils will shoot for number 600 next week against powerhouse Pleasant Grove.
