Third Round of 2021 Playoffs

The playoffs have reached the semifinals for the lower six classes in the AHSAA while the teams in the 7A state championship game are set. AISA championship games winners can celebrate titles in 2021.

   *    The AISA State Championship games were played Friday in Montgomery.

Class 1A -  Lowndes Academy defeated Jackson Academy 21-6 to claim their first title since 1997. Lowndes Academy (11-3) jumped out to a 13-0 halftime lead and held off Jackson Academy (10-2) at the Cramton Bowl.
Class 2A - Autauga Academy (13-0) outscored Escambia Academy (11-2) 52-35 for Coach Booby Carr's tenth state championship in the AISA.
Class 3A - Pike Liberal Arts defeated Tuscaloosa Academy 41-21 to claim their second straight championship. Head football coach Mario White stepped down at Pike Liberal Arts shortly before the Patriots win over Glenwood School last week but the team played on and won a title in 2021 under head coach Rush Hixon.

   *   The Class 7A finals are set. Thompson will take on Central Phenix City in Birmingham on December 1st. The Thompson Warriors took out a little revenge on Hoover as they defeated the Bucs 35-10. Central came from behind to defeat Auburn 28-17 to reach the title game for the third time in four seasons. Thompson will be playing for their third straight championship.

   *   Previews of every AHSAA playoff game for the semifinals will be available Sunday.

   *   The number of undefeated team dropped this week as Hoover, Brooks, Winfield and Spring Garden lost. The remaining undefeated teams:
           7A - Central Phenix City 12-0
           6A - Clay-Chalkville 12-0
           5A - Pike Road 11-0
           3A - Catholic Montgomery 12-0
           1A - Brantley 11-0, Sweet Water 11-0
           AISA - Autauga Academy 12-0

   *   The surprise team of 2021 after three rounds of the playoffs has to be Highland Home. The Flying Squadron started the season at 2-5 but have reeled off six straight victories to have a shot at the championship game. They will tackle Clarke County next week in Class 2A.

   *   Honorable mention goes to Fairview in 5A. The Aggies (12-1) have won ten straight games after an early season loss to Guntersville. This is the furthest the school has ever gone in the post season. Fairview took out Parker 44-17. The Aggies have won a school record 10 consecutive games.

   *   How about Andalusia? The Bulldogs have survived to play in the semifinals five of the last six seasons but have not reached the title game since 1977 when  they won their last championship under coach Don Sharpe. The Bulldogs take on Pike Road this week. Pike Road defeated Andalusia 28-14 in week four.

   *   Hueytown has been on a tear since an early season loss to Clay-Chalkville. The Golden Gophers (12-1) beat Opelika 46-10 and have scored a total of 698 points in twelve games. They scored 50 or more points in all but four of those games. The state record for points scored in a season belongs to Linden (2016) with 764. Hueytown takes on Hillcrest Tuscaloosa next week at home a team they defeated 38-30 earlier this season. The two teams are 0-5 in semifinal games.

   *   Catholic Montgomery slugged Hillcrest Evergreen 41-6. The Knights have allowed only 33 points in rolling up a 13-0 record. They have outscored their opponents 629-33. They are defeating opponents by an average of 45.8 points a game. Next up for the Knights is Montgomery Academy, a team they shutout 42-0 in week six.

   *   Another rematch in the semifinals pits Piedmont at Saks. The Bulldogs of Piedmont defeated Saks 28-12 in week three earlier this season. It will mark the seventh staright season Piedmont has reached the semifinals. They advanced to the championship game four of those seasons.

   *   Montgomery Academy did something rare on Friday. They shutout T.R. Miller to hand the Tigers just their second shutout in the last 438 games and the first since the 2015 season.

   *   Mountain Brook shutout Pinson Valley 30-0 for their seventh shutout of the season. The Spartans have allowed just 96 points all season. Ironically 51 of those points came in a 51-0 loss to 7A Thompson. Wow! The defense has allowed more than one touchdown in one other game. Pinson Valley was shutout for the first time in 98 games.

   *   Cleveland defeated Southeastern 39-8 for their first third round playoff victory. Pike Road accomplished the same feat when they shutout Faith Academy 42-0. Fairview joined the group with their 44-27 win over Parker.

   *   The best semifinal games I would most like to see; Clay-Chalkville (13-0) at Mountain Brook (12-1) and Sweet Water (12-0) at Brantley (12-0).

   *   A lot of teams will be seeking their first ever trip to a championship game. Clarke County, Cleveland, Fairview, Highland Home, Hillcrest Tuscaloosa, Hueytown, Pike Road and Wadley have never won a semifinal playoff game.

   *   Teams who have not won semifinal playoff games in a while include; Andalusia (1977), Jackson (2011), Montgomery Academy (1987), Mountain Brook (1996) and Saks (1996).

   *   Teams who have never hosted a semifinal game include; Pike Road, Cleveland and Clarke County.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the semifinals along with their all-time record. Madison Academy (5-1), Oneonta (9-2), Mars Hill (3-0), Sweet Water (12-6), and Brantley (7-4).

   *   A total of four teams are tied at the top with thirteen consecutive victories. Central Phenix City, Clay-Chalkville, Catholic Montgomery and Autauga Academy survived undefeated.

   *   Fyffe saw several streaks end this season and another fell Firday night as the Red Devils lost to Saks 14-7. They had put together a string of 54 consecutive home wins. Thompson assumes the top of this list with a string of 29 staright home victories. Catholic Montgomery (27) and Brantley (25) are close behind.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 291 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Bobby Carr won his tenth state championship at Edgewood Academy and most recently at Autauga Academy. That total is the state record.

   *   Congratulations to the latest hall of fame coaches selected this week. Stacy Luker, Jimmy Perry and Danny Powell will join the group of elite head football coaches in the hall of fame later.

   *   One last note on a few head coaches. While Buddy Anderson leads the all-time winning list with 346 wins over the course of his career at Vestavia Hills, no less than four active coaches are approaching his numbers. Terry Curtis (336-92), Danny Horn (332-93), Paul Benefield (322-55) and Waldon Tucker (322-144-3) will all have a shot at Coach Anderson next year. While these four coaches are no longer participating in the 2021 playoffs, I am sure they are hard at work preparing for next season already.
