Third Round of 2021 Playoffs

The second round of the playoffs is history. The 7A teams move on to the semi-finals while the other six classes meet in the quarterfinals. AISA championships are Friday in Montgomery.

   *    The AISA State Championship games are set for this Friday. The games will be played at the Cramton Bowl this season on November 19th.
            Class 1A 12:00 noon
                      Jackson Academy vs. Lowndes Academy

            Class 2A 3:30 pm
                      Autauga Academy vs. Escambia Academy

            Class 3A 7:00 pm
Tuscaloosa Academy vs. Pike Liberal Arts

   *   In a strange twist, head football coach Mario White stepped down at Pike Liberal Arts shortly before the game between the Patriots and Glenwood School. Pike Liberal Arts still won the game 29-6.

   *   When Autauga Academy and Escambia Academy square off next Friday it will be the fifth meeting in title game between the two schools in the last six years.

   *   Previews of every playoff game for the second round will be available Sunday.

   *   The only undefeated team to lose this week was Alexandria who fell to Parker 41-34. The remaining undefeated teams:
           7A - Central Phenix City 12-0, Hoover 12-0
           6A - Clay-Chalkville 12-0
           5A - Pike Road 11-0
           4A - Brooks 12-0
           3A - Catholic Montgomery 12-0, Winfield 12
           2A - Spring Garden 12-0
           1A - Brantley 11-0, Sweet Water 11-0
           AISA - Autauga Academy 12-0

   *   Spanish Fort lost to Opelika 28-14 and lost for the first time ever in the first two rounds of the playffs. Their record now stands at 28-1.

   *   Central Phenix City defeated Theodore 77-41 and that is the most points ever scored by any Red Devil team in a single game. It is the fourth most points ever scored in any playoff game. Clay-Chalkville holds the current record when they defeated Scottsboro 85-50 in 2014.

   *   Decatur Heritage Christian accomplished the same feat by outscoring Ragland 76-60. The 136 combined points are the most ever in any playoff game besting the 135 scored between Clay-Chalkville and Scottsboro in 2014. Decatur Heritage quarterback Brayden Kyle accounted for 11 touchdowns including nine rushing for a state record in the game.

   *   Catholic Montgomery shutout Bayside Academy 31-0 for their eighth shutout of the season. The Knights have allowed only 27 points in rolling up a 12-0 record.

   *   Hoover advances to the semifianls for the fourteenth year in a row.

   *   Number four seeds are still alive through the second round. Gardendale and Woodland both advance to play again next week. Hillcreat Evergeen entered the playoffs with a 5-5 record and will also advance.

   *   Hueytown has been on a tear since an early season loss to Clay-Chalkville. The Golden Gophers beat McGill-Toolen 49-17 and have scored a total of 652 points in eleven games. They scored 50 or more points in all but three of those games. The state record for points scored in a season belongs to Linden (2016) with 764. Hueytown takes on Opelika next week in the quarterfinals at home.

   *   Keith defeated Fayette County 38-0 for their first second round playoff victory. Pike Road accomplished the same feat when they beat St. Paul's 29-17. Southeastern joined the gorup with a 37-18 win over Sulligent.

   *   Teams winning second round games for the first time in a while include; Fairview (1994) with a 35-21 victory over Russellville. Parker (1998) by dropping Alexandria 41-34. Winfield (2006) defeated Ohatchee 56-27.

   *   The surprise team of the year thus far has to be Keith. Under Coach Anthony Lumpkin the Bears are 10-1 and face powerhouse Brantley next week. They have allowed one touchdown or less in every victory this year.

   *   Class 6A region six has three teams reaching the quarterfinals as Clay-Chalkville, Pinson Valley and Gardendale will play again next week. In 2A, region six also has three teams advancing as Spring Graden, Cleveland and Southeastern aare still alive.

   *   The best third round matchups I would most like to see; Thompson (11-1) at Hoover (12-0) in a rematch, American Christian (11-1) at Vigor (11-1), Oneonta (11-1) at Brooks (12-0), Winfield (12-0) at Piedmont (10-2), Brantley (11-0) at Keith (10-1) and Sweet Water (11-0) at Maplesville (11-1).

   *   Center Point, Cleveland, Fairview, Keith, Pike Road and Southeastern have never won a quarterfinal playoff game.

   *   Teams who have not won third round playoff games in a while include; B.B. Comer (1995), Gardendale (1984), Good Hope (1997), Parker (1989), Winfield (2006) and Woodland (2006).

   *   The 7A teams are playing semifinal games this coming week. Hoover is 19-5 in this round and 12-2 at home. One of those home losses came to Thompson in 2018.

   *   Teams who have never hosted a quarterfinal game include; Catholic Montgomery, Cleveland and Keith.

   *   Saraland (4-0), Mars Hill (3-0) and Pinson Valley (4-0) have never lost a quarterfinal playoff game.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the quarterfinals along with their all-time record in the third round of the playoffs. Pickens County (10-3), Sweet Water (12-4), Pickens County (10-3), T.R. Miller (17-6), and UMS-Wright (15-9).

   *   Maplesville is 14-1 as the home team in the quarterfinals and they host Sweet Water this coming week.

   *   A total of nine teams are tied at the top with eleven consecutive victories. Central Phenix City, Clay-Chalkville, Brooks, Spring Garden, Catholic Montgomery, Hoover, Winfield and Autauga Academy survived undefeated.

   *   Fyffe has put together a string of 54 consecutive home wins. The Red Devils defeated J.B. Pennington 43-14 Friday. The Red Devils host Saks this week.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 290 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Head football coach George Redding Jr. at Fairview picked a great time to see his Aggies win the first second round game in school history. He also celebrated the 100th victory of his career at Fairview. His record in 15 seasons at the helm stands at 100-62. Fairview has gone from 2-7 in 2017 to 5-5 in 2019, 9-3 in 2019, 10-2 last season and are 11-1 this year. The Aggies are also in the middle of a school record nine game winning streak. Go Aggies!
