First Round of 2021 Playoffs

The first round of the playoffs is history. Now the fun begins.

   *   The remaining undefeated teams:
           7A - Central Phenix City 11-0, Hoover 11-0
           6A - Clay-Chalkville 11-0
           5A - Alexandria 11-0, Pike Road 10-0
           4A - Brooks 11-0
           3A - Catholic Montgomery 11-0, Winfield 11
           2A - Spring Garden 11-0
           1A - Brantley 10-0, Sweet Water 10-0
           AISA - Autauga Academy 11-0

   *   The "Pick the Super Seven Teams" in the forums has eleven participants this year. It seems everyone had a perfect score in the first round.

   *   Previews of every playoff game for the second round will be available Sunday.

   *   Number four seeds beating number one is always interesting and this year is no exception. Oak Mountain, Enterprise, Baldwin County, Gardendale, Ramsay, Sulligent and Woodland all pulled off the upset as number four seeds this week.

   *   Hueytown has been on a tear since an early season loss to Clay-Chalkville? The Golden Gophers beat Eufaula 50-13 and have scored a total of 603 points in eleven games. They scored 50 or more points in all but two of those games. Hueytown takes on McGill-Toolen next week in the second round of the playoffs in Mobile.

   *   Randolph defeated Fayette County 38-0 for their first playoff victory ever. Southeastern accomplished the same feat when they best Lexington 48-28.

   *   Baldwin County picked up their first playoff victory since the 2003 season by dropping Helena 32-29. Jackson-Olin defeated Cullman 22-14 in overtime for their first playoff win since 1997. Kinston got their first playoff win since 1987 when the beat Central Hayneville 10-6. Meek defeated R.A. Hubbard 52-20 for their first playoff win since 2003.

   *   The surprise team of the year thus far has to be Keith. Under Coach Anthony Lumpkin the Bears are 9-1 and face Notasulga next week. They have allowed one touchdown or less in every win this year.

   *   Class 7A region three swept region four for the second consecutive season and the third time in four years. In 6A, region three was swept by region one. Lastly in 1A region five swept region seven.

   *   The best second round matchups I would most like to see; Brairwood (10-1) at Clay-Chalkville (11-0), Leeds (10-1) at Pleasant Grove (9-1) and Randolph (10-1) at Brooks (11-0).

   *   Keith, Kinston, Pike Road, Priceville, Randolph and Southeastern have never won a second round playoff game.

   *   Teams who have not won second round playoff games in a while include; B.B. Comer (1995), Enterprise (1993), Fairview (1994), Jackson-Olin (1996), Meek (1993), Parker (1998), Sparta Academy (1997) and Theodore (1999).

   *   Teams who have never hosted a second round game include; Faith Academy (in the AHSAA) and Keith.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the second round along with their all-time record in the second round of the playoffs. Hoover (27-1) their last loss was in 1978, Spanish Fort (13-0), Maplesville (26-5) UMS-Wright (24-5), Lanett (17-5) and Sweet Water (20-7).

   *   Mars Hill (3-0) and Northside (2-0) have never lost a second round playoff game along with Spanish Fort (13-0).

   *   Home team records in the second round of the playoffs for teams hosting games next week. Hoover (15-0), Mountain Brook (7-1), Andalusia (6-1), UMS-Wright (15-3), St. Paul's (10-3), Handley (6-1), Piedmont (9-1), Lanett (12-3), Maplesville (14-1), Pickens County (7-0), and Sweet Water (13-2)

   *   Road teams with the best records for teams playing next week on the road. Spanish Fort (7-0) and Homewood (9-2),

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 243 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs defeated Sparkman 56-14 in the first round of the playoffs.

   *   A total of nine teams are tied at the top with eleven consecutive victories. Central Phenix City, Clay-Chalkville, Alexandria, Brooks, Spring Garden, Catholic Montgomery, Hoover, Winfield and Autauga Academy survived undefeated.

   *   Fyffe has put together a string of 54 consecutive home wins. The Red Devils defeated Walter Wellborn 34-0 on Friday. The Red Devils travel to J.B. Pennington in the second round next week.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 289 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.
