Week Three


The 2019 season is underway. Region play began this week for most teams so the playoff race is on. Here are a few tidbits and notes from this week's action.

   *  Something new this year are the AHSFHS Power Ratings. This week's projections are posted on the site now along with the Power Ratings for every school.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 211 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs fell to Thompson 48-30. Only once before have the Bucs allowed more than 48 points in a game. That was last year against Hewitt-Trussville.

   *  UMS-Wright owns the state's longest winning streak at twenty-one games. The Bulldogs defeated Andalusia 21-7 on Friday.

   *   Barbour County extended their state leading fifty-two game losing streak in a 59-14 loss to G.W. Long.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 39 consecutive region games after falling to Pisgah by a score of 51-8 this week.

   *  The Fyffe Red Devils have won 40 straight regular season games following a 49-0 thumping of Section.

   *   Demopolis had a streak of 32 consecutive region wins but they saw the streak come to an end against Bibb County when the fell by a score of 13-12. The Fyffe Red Devils now have the longest streak having won 27 straight region contests.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy lead all schools with a string of 41 consecutive home wins. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 31 game home winning streak.

   *   Hokes Bluff has won 12 consecutive road games. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a streak of 22 straight road victories.

   *   Maplesville has scored twenty or more points in 65 consecutive games The Red Devils beat up on A.L. Johnson 68-0.

   *   Fyffe continues to extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 251 games without being shutout.

   *   Thirteen teams scored more than 60 points this week. Thirty years ago, in 1989, only nineteen teams scored more than 60 the entire season. In 1979 only eight teams scored more than sixty points in a game all year long.

   *   Alabama is 18-23 against out of state competition this season. They are 9-7 against Georgia, 3-5 against Florida, 4-6 versus Mississippi and 2-5 against Tennessee.

   *   Ben Blackmon picked up his 100th win as a head coach as the Spanish Fort Toros took the week off. How did he do this? Daphne was forced to forfeit their win over the Toros last week thereby giving Coach Blackmon the win. His overall record now stands at 100-42 in 13 seasons as a head football coach.

   *   Coach Mark Freeman, currently the head football coach at Thomson, has accumulated 200 victories in his 21 year career. The Warriors not only gave him the historic 200 victory but knocked off Hoover in the process..

 * Evangel Christian Alabaster set a team record in a win 82-55 over Ezell-Harding TN breaking the previous record set in a victory over Cumberland Christian GA 78-28 on 9/21/2007.

 * Paul Bryant set a team record in a win 70-12 over Brookwood breaking the previous record set in a victory over Central Tuscaloosa 61-6 on 10/1/2004.

 * Douglas set a team record in a 72-0 loss to Boaz breaking the previous record set in a loss to Guntersville 68-0 on 9/30/2016.

 * Boaz set a team record by defeating Douglas 72-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Fairview 62-0 on 10/4/2002.

 * Muscle Shoals set a team record by defeating Columbia 62-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Lawrence County 63-7 on 9/16/2011.

 * Paul Bryant set a team record by defeating Brookwood 70-12 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Central Tuscaloosa 61-6 on 10/1/2004.

 * South Lamar set a team record by defeating Brilliant 62-0 tying the previous record set when they defeated Meek 62-0 on 10/20/2017.
 * Southern Prep Academy set a team record by defeating Camp Jewel House GA 61-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Tuskegee 50-0 on 10/14/1966.

 * Douglas set a team record in a loss 72-0 to Boaz breaking the previous record set when they lost to Guntersville 68-0 on 9/30/2016.

 * Ariton set a team record in a 54-49 victory over Geneva County breaking the previous record set when they defeated Abbeville 54-46 on 10/14/2016.

 * Cleveland set a team record in a 65-44 victory over West End Walnut Grove breaking the previous record set in a loss to Fyffe 70-37 on 11/9/2007.

 * Evangel Christian Alabaster set a team record in a 82-55 victory over Ezell-Harding TN breaking the previous record set when they defeated Lighthouse Home School 65-54 on 10/6/2017.

 * Mars Hill set a team record in a 61-42 victory over Hackleburg breaking the previous record set when they defeated Linden 53-26 on 12/6/2018.

 * West End Walnut Grove set a team record in a loss 65-44 to Cleveland breaking the previous record set when they defeated Susan Moore 65-42 on 8/25/2016.

 * Barbour County has lost a team record 52 consecutive games since 10/25/2013.

 * Ellwood Christian has lost a team record 38 consecutive games since 9/17/2015.
 * Columbia has lost a team record 35 consecutive games since 10/23/2015.
 * Oak Grove has lost a team record 20 consecutive games since 9/22/2017.
 * Park Crossing has lost a team record 5 consecutive games since 11/2/2018.

 * Asbury set a team record with a 1-2 record. That ties the previous mark of 1-9-0 in 2018.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
