Week Five


The 2019 season is nearing the halfway point. Teams are in the hunt for region championships and playoff spots. Here are a few tidbits and notes from this week's action.

   *  UMS-Wright owns the state's longest winning streak at twenty-three games. The Bulldogs defeated Clarke County 24-0 on Friday.

   *   Barbour County extended their state leading fifty-four game losing streak in a 71-32 loss to Geneva County.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 41 consecutive region games after falling to Susan Moore by a score of 50-0 this week.

   *  The Fyffe Red Devils have won 42 straight regular season games following a 47-6 beat down of Asbury.

   *   The Red Devils also have the longest region winning streak having won 29 straight region contests after their latest region victory.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy lead all schools with a string of 42 consecutive home wins after defeating Northside Methodist Academy 35-24 on the road. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 32 game home winning streak.

   *   UMS-Wright holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 13 consecutive after defeating Clarke County on the road. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a streak of 23 straight road victories.

   *   Fyffe also has the longest current streak for scoring 20 or more points in a game. The Red Devils have put up at least 20 points in 50 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

   *   Fyffe continues to extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 253 games without being shutout.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 213 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *   Once again I ask the Question. Is anyone playing defense? This week thirteen teams scored more than 60 points led by American Christian who defeated Montevallo 84-30. The 114 point scored by both teams are the sixth most in state history.

   *   Vigor was shutout by Jackson 18-0. It is the first shutout the Wolves have suffered since losing 24-0 to Murphy back in 2005 some 170 games ago. Greenville also saw their streak of 139 games scoring come to an end against Rehobeth by a score of 6-0.

   *   Alabama is 23-24 against out of state competition this season after going 5-0 this week. They are 11-7 against Georgia, 4-6 against Florida, 5-6 versus Mississippi and 3-5 against Tennessee.

   *   According to our records, Jasper has won 600 games and becomes the 22nd team to top the 600 win mark this week. The Jasper records include a couple of name changes along the way from Walker County, Walker and most recently Jasper.

   *   Coach David McKinney won the 100th game in his football coaching career as Winfield defeated Lamar County 34-6. Coach McKinney is in his 13th season as a head coach at Gordo and Winfield and has compiled a record of 100-46 over the course of his coaching career.

 * American Christian set a team record in a win 84-30 over Montevallo breaking the previous record set in a victory over R.C. Hatch 71-18 on 10/26/2007.

 * Chelsea set a team record in a win 64-38 over Pelham tying the previous record set when they defeated Shelby County 64-28 on 11/1/2013.

 * Glencoe set a team record in a 61-0 loss to Walter Wellborn tying the previous record set in a loss to Piedmont 61-14 on 9/8/2017.

 * Montevallo set a team record in a 84-30 loss to American Christian breaking the previous record set in a loss to American Christian 70-54 on 9/21/2018.

 * Pelham set a team record in a 64-38 loss to Chelsea breaking the previous record set in a loss to Theodore 63-35 on 11/10/2000.



Margin of Victory in a game

 * Sardis set a team record by defeating Douglas 67-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Brindlee Mountain 58-0 on 8/27/2010.



Margin of Defeat in a game

 * Glencoe set a team record in a loss 61-0 to Walter Wellborn breaking the previous record set when they lost to Weaver 57-0 on 10/13/2017.



Points Scored by Both Teams in a Game

 * Opelika set a team record in a loss 63-28 to Central Phenix City breaking the previous record set in a loss to Carver Montgomery 55-34 on 8/27/2010.

 * St. John Paul II set a team record in a 49-48 victory over North Jackson breaking the previous record set in a loss to Good Hope 62-28 on 11/9/2018.

 * UMS-Wright has won a team record 23 consecutive games since 11/10/2017.
 * Chambers Academy has won a team record 18 consecutive games since 8/17/2018.
 * Mars Hill has won a team record 14 consecutive games since 10/5/2018.
 * Central Clay County has won a team record 13 consecutive games since 10/12/2018.

 * Barbour County has lost a team record 54 consecutive games since 10/25/2013.
 * Calhoun has lost a team record 45 consecutive games since 10/31/2014.
 * Ellwood Christian has lost a team record 40 consecutive games since 9/17/2015.

 * Alma Bryant has lost a team record 17 consecutive games since 10/19/2017.

 * Asbury set a team record with a 1-4 record. That ties the previous mark of 1-9-0 in 2018.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
