Week 2

The 2014 season began this past weekend. Here are a few tidbits from the first week of action.

  *   Head football coach Buddy Anderson at Vestavia Hills tied Waldon Tucker for the most wins in Alabama high school football history with 309.

  *    How about the new guys on the block? Helena opened their initial season in the AHSAA with a 30-15 win over Shelby County. Park Crossing matched the feat with an impressive victory over one of the oldest football programs in the state. On Thursday night the Thunderbirds defeated Sidney Lanier 20-6.

  *   The Hoover Bucs have opened the 2014 season 0-2. The last time they lost back-to-back games on the field was in 1998. The last time they opened a season 0-2 was in 1994.

  *   Spanish Fort extended their AHSAA leading consecutive game winning streak to 25 straight.

  *   Edgewood Academy leads the AISA school with a 46 game winning streak.

   *   Butler opened the season with another loss and the Rebels have lost 30 consecutive games. The streak is not close to the longest in state history behind R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row.

   *   Bullock County has also lost 32 consecutive region games in a row.

   *   Maplesville opened the season with a win and extend their regular season winning streak to 16 games. They are tied with Spanish Fort for the AHSAA lead. Edgewood Academy leads the AISA with a string of 34 straight victories.

   *   Tanner has a string of 35 consecutive games in which they have come out a winner in region play. Monroe Academy leads the AISA with a streak of 36 consecutive region wins.

   *   Maplesville has won 36 consecutive home games.

   *   Trinity, off to an 0-2 start with a tough schedule, will try to extend their streak of 32 straight winning seasons. The Wildcats last suffered through a losing season way back in 1981 when they finished with a 4-6 record.

   *   The T.R. Miller Tigers have an amazing streak of 344 games without being shutout.

   *   We missed it last week, but Coach Bob Grisham at Lauderdale County won the 100th game of his coaching career with a 35-7 victory over Forrest TN.
