 2023 Preview

Kinston completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Kinston finished sixth in Class 1A region two with a 3-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Since 2010, Kinston has gone a combined 55-82. Their 40.1% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Kinston has not won much with a record of 81-175. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 1A and 346th in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Rudy Free who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 17-24 over the past four seasons at Kinston. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Free. Over the course of his career, Coach Free's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

The Bulldogs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Kinston came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

The Bulldogs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Samson on Friday, August 25 at Alva Hawk Stadium. Last year the Samson Tigers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in eighth place in Class 2A region two. The Tigers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Red Level by a score of 38-24 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Kinston and Samson have met a total of 42 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 9-33-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Kinston winning by a score of 34-12.

Kinston lost 1A All-State  punter Cale Sumblin to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.
