 2023 Preview

Samson finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Samson finished eighth in Class 2A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The Tigers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 7-4 record in 2021.

Samson was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.9 points a game.

Samson struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.9 points a game.

Since 2010, Samson has gone a combined 65-72. Their 47.4% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Samson has managed to compile a record of 99-160. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 2A and 303rd in the AHSAA.

The Tigers are led by head coach Jason Wambles who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 22-29 over the past five seasons at Samson. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Wambles. Over the course of his career, Coach Wambles' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times .

The Tigers suffered through their worst season since 2009 winning just one game last season. They should rebound under Coach Wambles this season.

This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two.

The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Kinston on Friday, August 25 at Alva Hawk Stadium. Last year the Kinston Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 1A region two. The Bulldogs ended last season on a positive note with a win over Houston County by a score of 18-15 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Samson and Kinston have met a total of 42 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 33-9-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Kinston winning by a score of 34-12.

Samson lost 2A All-State  defensive lineman Logan Smith to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.
