 2017 Preview

Trinity finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Trinity just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region two with a 2-4 region record.

The Wildcats lost as many games as in any season since 1974. The Wildcats hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 8-4 record in 2015.

Trinity was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wildcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.5 points a game.

Since 2010, Trinity has gone a combined 50-30. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Trinity has gone a combined 227-82. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 4A and 14th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time.

Randy Ragsdale stepped down after 28 years as the head football coach at Trinity in Montgomery. His teams went a combined 242-86 during his time at Trinity and 29-24 in the playoffs.

His 2003 team finished a perfect 15-0 capping the season with a state championship.

Barry Loyal takes over for longtime coach Randy Ragsdale in 2017. Loyal graduated form the school in 1985 and was the teams offensive coordinator from 2000-05.

Loyal started the football program at Chattanooga Christian in 2005 and went 13-37 before leaving for an assistant coaching job at Signal Mountain High near Chattanooga the past three seasons.

The Trinity Wildcats will play in Class 4A region two during the 2017 season. The Wildcats have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 70-41 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 4A and 13th in the AHSAA.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Wildcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season. Trinity came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

Senior Luke Hufham returns after catching 30 passes for 337 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The defense returns Senior middle linebacker Caleb Kreitz who registered 94 tackles last season.

The Wildcats open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Jacksonville on Friday, August 25 at Golden Eagle Stadium. Last year the Jacksonville Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 8-2 and in second place in Class 4A region five. The Golden Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Cordova by a score of 46-23.

Trinity and Jacksonville have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 1-1-0 record against the Golden Eagles. They last met in 2016 with Jacksonville winning by a score of 31-3.
