 2017 Preview 


       Jacksonville completed the 2016 season with a 8-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region five, the Golden Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Jacksonville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cordova by a score of 46-23.

       Since 2010, Jacksonville has gone a combined 40-35. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Jacksonville has managed to compile a record of 110-143. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 4A and 265th in the AHSAA.

       The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Clint Smith who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 36-19 over the past five seasons at Jacksonville. Under his direction the Golden Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in fifteen season stands at 93-66 (58.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times and won one region championship. Coach Smith won a state championship at in 2000.

       If Jacksonville can win seven games this season, Coach Smith will reach the 100 win milestone.

       The Jacksonville Golden Eagles will play in Class 4A region five during the 2017 season.

       The Golden Eagles should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

       The Golden Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Trinity on Friday, August 25 at Golden Eagle Stadium. Last year the Trinity Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 4A region two.

       Jacksonville and Trinity have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Golden Eagles have a 1-1-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2016 with Jacksonville winning by a score of 31-3.

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
