2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
T.R. Miller completed the 2015 season with a 10-3 record. Last year T.R. Miller captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. T.R. Miller lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Hillcrest Evergreen team by a score of 25-22. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, T.R. Miller has gone a combined 59-15. Their 80.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 3A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, T.R. Miller has gone a combined 272-57. Their 83.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A and 1st in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-four winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2007. After thirty years as a head football coach and 305 victories, Coach Jamie Riggs stepped down after the 2015 season. His teams at T.R. Miller won 293 games and four state championships in 1991, 1994, 2000 and 2002. His 293 wins at Miller rank second only to Buddy Anderson at Vestavia Hills. His 119 region wins rank fourth all-time. With 28 playoff appearances he is second once again to Buddy Anderson. Lastly his 69 playoff victories rank first in state history. During his time at Miller, every team qualified for the post season and all but one finished with a winning record. Andrew Thomas will replace the legend in Brewton. Thomas went 60-5 in five seasons at Trenton near Gainsville Florida. Last season Trenton won the Class 1A state championship with a 14-0 record. His team also won the 2013 title. Thomas is a 2000 graduate of Florida State and also coached at his alma mater, Dixie County High, as well as Chiefland and Newberry in Florida. The T.R. Miller Tigers will play in Class 3A region one during the 2016 season. T.R. Miller will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. The Tigers enter the 2016 season having won 8 straight region games. While most teams rebuild during the off season, T.R. Miller has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Tigers should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Tigers have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1983 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. T.R. Miller will be under the direction of a different head coach in 2016 but the foundation has been laid for a new face who arrives after building a successful program in Florida. The Tigers open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Opp on Friday, August 26 at Municipal Stadium. Last year the Opp Bobcats finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in third place in Class 3A region one. The Bobcats lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Gordo by a score of 33-14. T.R. Miller and Opp have met a total of 35 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 21-14-0 record against the Bobcats. They last met in 2015 with T.R. Miller winning by a score of 27-26. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hamilton shutout an amazing 14 consecutive opponents from 1928-1930. A streak that will never be matched in modern football.
