2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Excel finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Excel finished seventh in Class 3A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 1985. The Panthers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Excel averaged scoring just 13.3 points a game. Since 2010, Excel has gone a combined 21-39. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 3A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Excel has managed to compile a record of 145-125. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 3A and 147th in the AHSAA. After four seasons as the head football coach at Excel, Richard Anderson will not return next season. His record was 15-25 without a playoff appearance. This past season the team finished last in region one without winning a region game. Jason Wambles takes over the Excel football program after seven seasons at Kinston. His teams went 32-44 at Kinston and 0-6 in the post season. He is a 1996 graduate of Kinston and played college football at Bethel University where he earned a degree. Coach Wambles' overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 32-44 (42.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Wambles' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times . The Excel Panthers will play in Class 3A region one during the 2016 season. Excel will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. Unfortunately, Excel plays in a region with the likes of Bayside Academy, Flomaton, Mobile Christian and T.R. Miller making it more difficult to claim one of the four playoff spots. The Panthers will need to find a way to upset one of those teams and win another three region games to have any chance at the post season. The Panthers open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Southern Choctaw on Friday, August 26 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Southern Choctaw Indians finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 2A region one. The Indians ended last season on a positive note with a win over Marengo by a score of 27-12 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Excel and Southern Choctaw have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 6-9-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2009 with Excel winning by a score of 21-18. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
