2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hueytown completed the 2015 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Hueytown just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region five with a 3-4 region record. Hueytown was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Golden Gophers want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.7 points a game. Since 2010, Hueytown has gone a combined 40-28. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 6A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Hueytown has managed to compile a record of 121-146. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 6A and 239th in the AHSAA. The Golden Gophers are led by head coach Scott Mansell who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 7-13 over the past two seasons at Hueytown. The Golden Gophers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Mansell. Coach Mansell's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 7-13 (35.0%). The Hueytown Golden Gophers will play in Class 6A region five during the 2016 season. The Golden Gophers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season. Hueytown has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2012 but hope to return to the post season this year. The Golden Gophers open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Center Point on Friday, August 19 at Hueytown High School Stadium. Last year the Center Point Eagles finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 6A region six. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to McAdory by a score of 35-10. Hueytown and Center Point have met a total of 16 times on the football field.
