2016 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cherokee completed the 2015 season with a 4-5 record. Last year Cherokee just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region eight with a 2-4 region record. The Indians have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2002 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Indians last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, the Cherokee football program has struggled with a record of 16-42. Over the past 25 seasons, Cherokee has managed to compile a record of 100-152. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 1A and 283rd in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2008. The Indians are led by head coach Lymos McDonald who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-5 record in his first season at Cherokee. The Indians saw improvement from a 1-8 record the season before coach McDonald arrived. The Indians have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach McDonald. Coach McDonald's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 84-45 (65.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach McDonald's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times and won three region championships. Coach McDonald won a state championship at R.A. Hubbard in 1999. The Cherokee Indians will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2016 season. The Indians may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region eight this year. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Indians will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region eight this season. Cherokee has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2002 but hope to return to the post season this year. The Indians open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent R.A. Hubbard on Thursday, August 18 at R.A. Hubbard Stadium. Last year the R.A. Hubbard Chiefs finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 1A region eight. The Chiefs ended last season on a positive note with a win over Brilliant by a score of 33-13 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Cherokee and R.A. Hubbard have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Indians have a 6-9-1 record against the Chiefs. They last met in 2015 with Cherokee winning by a score of 43-7. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
