2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tharptown finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Tharptown finished seventh in Class 2A region eight with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. No team at Tharptown ever lost more games in a season than the ten they lost last year. The Wildcats have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Wildcats have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2016. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Tharptown averaged scoring just 5.5 points a game. The Wildcats also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 45.1 points a game. The Wildcats would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Tharptown football program has struggled with a record of 12-48. Over the past 10 seasons, Tharptown has not won much with a record of 23-73. Their 24.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 1A and 368th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. Jason Murray leaves Tharptown after one year with an 0-10 record. Kevin Lacey will lead the Tharptown football program into the 2016 season. He is a 2006 graduate of Phil Campbell and Athens State College. He has been at Tharptown for the past three years. The Tharptown Wildcats will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2016 season. The Wildcats may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region eight this year. The Wildcats have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 56-54 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 1A and 164th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 13 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Wildcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Tharptown will be to simply win some games. The Wildcats open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Phil Campbell on Friday, August 19 at Parrish Stadium. Last year the Phil Campbell Bobcats finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 2A region eight. The Bobcats lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Tanner by a score of 73-7. Tharptown and Phil Campbell have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 1-5-0 record against the Bobcats. They last met in 2015 with Phil Campbell winning by a score of 47-13. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
