The 2025 season begins this week with an almost full schedule of games. Here are a few tidbits
entering the season.
* We
are back with for our nineteenth season of covering high school football in
Alabama. Once again we will be releasing a weekly 'Tidbits and Records' article. We do ask that if you
see something wrong on the website pertaining to a game score please let us know
and it will be corrected. Thanks to all the fans who constantly work to assist
us with this project throughout the year.
* There were no less than 111 coaching changes during the off season. That
number is slightly above the average for the past few decades. It should be
exciting to watch the coaches and how they impact their various football
programs in the years to come.
* There are some of excellent interstate matchups
to open the 2025 football season. The Hoover Bucs will entertain IMG Academy out
of central Florida
to open the season on Thursday night. Also on Thursday Moody will travel to
Gainesville GA to take on the Red Elephants. The next night Oxford will host
Central Carrolton, Georgia in a rematch of a great game played last year. In other Friday night games; Mary Montgomery
will host Pace FL and Coosa
Christian is on the road to face off with the perennial powerhouse
Pierce County, Georgia.
* Other great games across the state this week include Hartselle (9-3) at Austin (9-2),
Parker (14-1) at Ramsay (8-4), Saraland (13-1) at Jackson (14-1), Cherokee County (13-2) at Piedmont (13-1), Reeltown (14-1) at T.R. Miller (12-1), and Leroy (10-2) at Thomasville (11-1). Many other games will be important as teams prepare for a long regular season.
* The
ASWA polls are out and as usual we have a few notes there. Southside Selma, the
#8 team in 3A, are ranked for the first time since midway through the 1989
football season. Pleasant Valley also joins the 2A poll as the #10 team for the first
time since 1984.
* Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing
176 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season.
The Red Devils open the 2025 season as the #3 team in
3A and face an excellent Maplesville team on August 22nd in the AHSAA Kickoff
Classic in Montgomery.
* Catholic Montgomery begins the 2025 football season riding the state's longest
winning streak at twenty-nine games. Jackson and Reeltown are just behind them with
14 game streaks.
* Columbia now
holds onto the longest losing streak at 91 straight contests. They now hold the
all-time record for consecutive losses.
* Catholic Montgomery has a streak of 40 consecutive region wins.
The Knights open region play in a couple of weeks.
Demopolis (28) and Reeltown (23)
are the next two schools with long region winning streaks.
* Columbia has lost
55 consecutive region games
but do not begin region play for a couple of weeks.
*
The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won
43 straight regular season games. Central Clay County is behind with a
string of 26 consecutive regular season wins.
* Saraland, ranked #3 in
6A, enters the 2025 season with a string of
33 consecutive home wins. The Spartans will host Gulf Shores on their home field
in week three.
* Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road
winning streak having won 28 consecutive road games. Their first away game is
against St. Clair County on 8/29.
* Clay-Chalkville has won 14 consecutive season openers and
will open this season on 8/22 against Hueytown on the road.
*
Gordo will try to extend their streak of 32 straight winning seasons. Gordo has
won at least nine games in each of the last eleven seasons so they show no signs of slowing
down anytime soon. The Green
Wave last suffered through a losing season way back in 1992 when they finished
with a 4-6 record. Oneonta owns the longest streak
all-time when they won more games than they lost every year between 1956-1994.
Demopolis (30) and Fyffe (28) are not far behind.
*
Fyffe hopes to avoid the dreaded shutout and extend their streak of
consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 333 games
without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354
games.
* The Luverne Tigers will
be working hard to extend their
string of qualifying for the playoffs to 43 consecutive seasons under second year
head coach Bobby Hudson. He is the tenth different coach during the streak. The last
time they did not qualify for the playoffs was way back in 1982.
* Curry has suffered through
twenty-eight consecutive losing seasons. The Yellow Jackets finished last year with a
0-10 record. That is the third longest in history behind only
R.C. Hatch with a string of 36 straight losing seasons and Vina with 33 straight
losing seasons.
*
Ten coaches will be in search of
their 100th win as a head football coach once the season opens. All have over 90
victories during their careers. Other coaches are within reach of several
different milestones this season.
