End of the 2025 Regular Season Notes

The undefeated teams....... Our hats are off to the twenty-two teams that maneuvered the 2025 regular season without suffering a loss. A special congratulations to Southside Selma, Northside and St. Michael for their first ever perfect regular seasons. Now the quest for a state championship begins for each of these teams. Below is a list of undefeated teams along with the last time they were undefeated:
           7A - None
           6A - Clay-Chalkville 10-0 (2023), Saraland 9-0 (2024), Muscle Shoals 9-0 (2023)
           5A - Fairview 10-0 (2024),  Northside 10-0 (Never), Williamson 9-0 (2000)
           4A - Anniston 10-0 (2022), Hamilton 10-0 (2012), Plainview 10-0 (1999), St. Michael 10-0 (Never), West Morgan 10-0 (2024)
           3A - Mars Hill 10-0 (2019), Piedmont 10-0 (2024), Southside Selma 10-0 (Never)
           2A - Luverne 10-0 (2019)
           1A - Appalachian 10-0 (Never), Hubbertville 10-0 (2014), Leroy 10-0 (2023), Maplesville 10-0 (2017), McKenzie 10-0 (2010), Wadley 9-0 (2024)
           AISA - Patrician Academy 10-0 (2022)

Winning a region championship is a goal of every team in their quest for a state title. University Charter School, Coosa Christian, and St. Michael won their first ever region titles this year.

Several schools have gone a while since winning their last region title. They include; Baker (1989), Sparkman (2006), Plainview (2017), Hamilton (2012), Geraldine (2018), Southside Selma (1989), Bayside Academy (2011), Appalachian (2009), Addison (2018) and Hubbertville (2014).

The longest streak for most consecutive region titles among teams winning a region championship this season belongs to Catholic Montgomery with seven in a row. Chambers Academy also won their tenth in a row in the AISA. Fyffe saw their streak of nine straight come to an end.

Brantley has won 32 region championship since 1974. That ranks them at the top followed by R.A. Hubbard/Courtland (29), Sweet Water (28), Fyffe (28), Demopolis (28), Deshler (27) and Reeltown (27).  Ironically none of these teams won a region title this season.

Maplesville holds the record with thirty ten win seasons. T.R. Miller and Hoover have twenty-nine ten win seasons in the history of the schools. The Bucs and Tigers will need to win four playoff games each to tie Maplesville.

The toughest region title goes to Class 7A region three with six teams winning at least half their games. They went 18-6 against non-region foes this year. Prattville (6-4) and Hillcrest Tuscaloosa (6-4) will miss the playoffs this year.  The non-region losses were to IMG Academy FL, Grayson GA, Clay-Chalkville , Pike Road, Vigor and Central Tuscaloosa. Not a bad loss all year in non-region games.

Gordo has a streak of 33 consecutive winning seasons. Others with long streaks, along with their last losing season, include; Demopolis (1994) and Fyffe (1996). Although they did not make this list, the T.R. Miller Tigers have suffered only three losing seasons in the past sixty-one years.

Teams that finished the 2025 football season with a winning record that have not enjoyed one for a while with their last winning season include: Ashford who is 7-2 and last had a winning season in 2014. Central Tuscaloosa 7-2 (2014), Glencoe 7-3 (2015), Cold Springs 6-4 (2015), Carver Birmingham 6-2 (2017), Pell City 7-3 (2017), St. Clair County 9-1 (2017), McIntosh 7-3 (2018), Southern Choctaw 7-3 (2018), New Brockton (6-4 (2018), Stanhope Elmore 7-3 (2019), Bullock County 7-3 (2019) and Fayetteville 8-2 (2019).

Teams that finished the 2025 football season with a losing record for the first time in a while with their last losing season include: Elba 3-7 (2006), Spanish Fort 4-6 (2007), St. James 4-6 (2013), Alabama Christian 4-6 (2018) and Millry 4-6 (2018).

The biggest turnarounds this year belongs to a couple teams who improved by six wins from the 2024 football season. Cottage Hill Christian went from 3-7 last year to 9-1 this season and Red Bay 2-8 to 8-2.  Other who increased their win total by five games include: Priceville 2-8 to 7-3, Ashville 1-9 to 6-4, Plainview 5-5 to 10-0, Thorsby 4-7 to 9-1, Glencoe 2-8 to 7-3 and Fayetteville 3-6 to 8-2. Congrats to these coaches and teams for improving their programs in 2025.

The biggest disappointments this season include; Decatur Heritage Christian 7-3 to 1-9, Horseshoe Bend 6-5 to 0-10, Locust Fork 8-3 to 2-8 and Vina 6-4 to 0-10.

     Playoff Notes

Hoover, with 109 playoff wins, holds the record for most post season wins. The T.R. Miller Tigers (97), Maplesville (95), UMS-Wright (94) Sweet Water (93) are just behind the Bucs. The T.R. Miller Tigers also hold the record with thirty-nine first round wins.

The Colbert County Indians have made the most playoff appearances with 49 and extended that streak this year. Sweet Water (45) follows closely. T.R. Miller, Fyffe and Oxford are right behind with 44 post season appearances.

The Hoover Bucs have won 27 consecutive opening round playoff games. They have won every first round game since 1992. They will be looking to extend that streak against Central Phenix City on the road this week which will likely be their toughest first round opponent during this streak.

Want some virtual locks for the playoffs in the first round? UMS-Wright is 30-1 since 1990 and 22-0 at home in first round games. Maplesville is 29-1 all-time in first round games played on their home turf. Fyffe is 22-1 since 1998 in first round home games. Ramsay is 10-1 in the first round. Don't bet the farm, just interesting facts.

Last season the number four seeds knocked off the number one seeds in six games. That is about the average since 2000 when the AHSAA went to the current playoff format. The most in any season was 2013 and 2018 when nine number four seeds pulled off the upsets.

More numbers from a few first round playoff matchups this week. All these are first round records only.
            * Thompson is 12-1 at home, Carver Montgomery is 6-11 on the road.

            * Maplesville is 29-1 at home, R.C. Hatch is 0-5 in the first round.

Which teams have a winning record on the road in the first round? Here are some of the best first round road records for teams that travel this week. Vestavia Hills (11-7), Fort Payne (8-8), UMS-Wright (10-2), W.S. Neal (10-9), Pike County (6-4), Thomasville (8-8), Sulligent (6-4) and Woodland (9-5).

Teams who qualified for the playoffs for the first time in a while include: McIntosh (2012), Central Coosa (2015), Central Tuscaloosa (2018), St. Clair County (2017), Fayetteville (2019) and Cottage Hill Christian (2019) ended playoff droughts this year.

The Hoover Bucs hold another streak of winning 22 consecutive home playoff games between 1993-2018 season. That streak was broken when the Bucs fell to Thompson in the semi-finals.

Huntsville will miss the playoffs despite a 7-3 record. Eleven teams missed the post season despite winning six games. Teams winning six games included; Dothan, Enterprise, Hillcrest Tuscaloosa, Prattville, St. Paul's, Ardmore, New Brockton, J.B. Pennington, Cold Springs, Sweet Water and Verbena. Another dozen teams won at least five games but failed to garner a playoff spot this year.

Six teams finished the regular season with three victories but somehow managed to win the right games to qualify for a playoff spot. They include; Dadeville, Beauregard, Sand Rock, Susan Moore, Tanner and Elba. Thirteen other playoff teams in the AHSAA won just four games during the regular season and will join the other teams in the playoffs.

Luverne continues their streak of consecutive playoff appearances with a state best forty-three straight appearances. The current next longest streaks belong to UMS-Wright (32), Demopolis (30) and McAdory (29).

Aliceville saw their twenty-nine season playoff run end in 2025. Sweet Water also saw their streak of twenty-four consecutive playoff appearances halted this year.  Pickens County will not make the playoffs after qualifying the past twenty seasons.  Spanish Fort saw their 17 year streak end too. St. Paul's saw their streak end at 15 seasons.

T.R. Miller has won 39 first round playoff games, the most all-time. Brantley (36), Maplesville (35), Colbert County (34), Gordo (34) and Sweet Water (34) are close behind.

Teams who have never won a first round game that qualified for the playoffs in 2025 include; Bullock County (0-2), Chickasaw (0-6), Pleasant Valley (0-6), Sipsey Valley (0-7), University Charter School (0-2) and Woodville (0-5). Each of these teams would like to get their championship hopes underway with a win next Friday night.

We wish all the teams well in the post season. Good luck and see you at the 2025 AHSAA Super Seven Championships in Birmingham.
