Week Eight Tidbits & Records

Week eight of the 2025 football season is history. Some teams have clinched a playoff spot with many more working hard toward that goal. Here are a few tidbits from this past week's games.

   *   The AHSFHS Podcast is uploaded for our listeners. This week we switched formats and are joined by all three of the Barber Shop Gurus for a special edition. Join us.

   *   Look for the Barber Shop Guru predictions on Tuesday along with the usual content at AHSFHS.org. The guys went 10-2 last week for another great round of analysis and picks. You can test your luck in beating them by joining us in the forums.

   *   No out-of-state games this week with a few more to be played the last week of the regular season. Here is how our great state stacks up thus far. Overall the AHSAA schools are 22-15 against other states.  Here are the records against neighboring states.  Georgia (3-6), Florida (11-9), Mississippi (6-0), Tennessee (1-0) and South Carolina (1-0).  There are a handful of out of state games on the slate this week.

   *   Only four ranked teams lost to unranked teams this week in the ASWA polls.

   *   The four teams losing to unranked teams included; Prattville upsetting Hewitt-Trussville 24-21, Scottsboro surprising Guntersville 31-13, Cottonwood shocking #2 Ariton 28-27 and the shocker of the year with Vinemont knocking off #3 Gordo 22-19.

   *   Teams in danger of missing the playoffs who are usual participants:  Enterprise is all but eliminated.  Spanish Fort will need to win out and still needs help.  St. James has to pick up a win over Tallassee this week to stay alive.  Pleasant Grove is also in a must win situation against West Blocton this week.  Thomasville must win out.  Sweet Water is all but eliminated unless they can win out and get a lot of help from the teams above them.

   *  Statement wins:  Thompson beat Hillcrest Tuscaloosa 56-10, Saraland got past St. Paul's in a huge region matchup 42-10, Williamson continued to roll as they knocked off UMS-Wright 40-10, Bayside Academy beat Cottage Hill Christian 25-7.

   *   More statement wins.  Coosa Christian clinched a region title with a 41-8 win over Cold Springs, Leroy rolled past Southern Choctaw 28-12 and Fairview defeated Priceville 28-9 in another big region game.  Central Phenix City outscored Carver Montgomery 58-35.

   *   There were a few other big games played last week.  Muscle Shoals got a big win over Jasper 34-15.  St. Michael continued their winning ways with an impressive 46-37 victory over Mobile Christian. Plainview overcame North Jackson 35-24. Hueytown got past McAdory 43-38. All these games went a long way toward teams wrapping up playoff spots and a shot at a region crown.

   *  Upsets not among ranked teams. Carroll beat Greenville 29-12. Greene County got past Isabella 38-16 and Enterprise shocked Opelika 42-20.

   *  Comeback wins?  Fairhope led most of the game but Mary Montgomery and the Vikings came by for a hard fought 28-21 victory.  Helena overcame a 10-point deficit to grab a hard fought win over Pelham 21-20.  Boaz scored a touchdown with just over two minutes remaining to knock off Brewer 23-19.

   *  Close games?  On Thursday night Mountain Brook and Pinson Valley played one for the ages. With three touchdowns combined by both teams in the last two minutes the Spartans overcame Pinson for a 39-35 win. Hamilton defeated Good Hope 28-21 in one of the biggest games in that area in a while.

   *  It seems every week the offenses are setting records. Parker beat Minor 70-20.  Eleven teams scored more than 60 points.  In all 43 teams scored at least 50 points this week in the AHSAA.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 183 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season. The Red Devils were ranked #4 last week in Class 3A.

   *   Wadley has the state's longest winning streak currently at twenty-one games. The Bulldogs defeated Lee-Scott Academy 42-7 last week.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 98 straight setbacks. The Eagles fell to Cullman 39-0. They hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   Demopolis owns a string of 31 consecutive region victories. The Tigers knocked off Sipsey Valley 28-20.

   *   Columbia has also lost 59 consecutive region games.

   *   West Morgan has won 31 straight regular season games following the Rebels win over Danville by a score of 59-7 Friday.

   *   Saraland, ranked #2 in 6A, has reeled off a string of 36 consecutive home victories.  I don't think anyone wished to schedule a game against the Spartans in Saraland any time soon.

   *   Saraland also has the longest away winning streak with 16 consecutive road wins. They finish the season with four straight home games and will not be back on the road until the playoffs

   *   The Red Devils of Fyffe are currently sitting on a string of 340 games without being shutout.  T.R. Miller tops this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   The Luverne Tigers have clinched a playoff spot in Class 2A Region 3.  They hold the state record for most consecutive playoff appearances with a string of 43 straight seasons.

   *   Gordo with their six victories this season are guaranteed of yet another winning season.  They have not lost more games than they won since finishing 4-6 in 1992. That's a streak of 33 consecutive seasons and the longest current streak in the state.

   *   Coach Steve Smith and the Westbrook Christian Warriors traveled out of state last week and knocked off Trion, Georgia 35-28 in ovetime.  The significance of this game is that Coach Smith joined the 300 win club for high school football coaches in Alabama.  It was a hard fought game for that special 300th victory.  His overall record in 31 seasons stands at 300-91.  Congratulation Coach!

   *   Mike Battles Jr., the head coach at Southern Academy, joined the 200 win club alongside his father this week as Southern defeated Fort Dale Academy 36-30.  His father won 216 games over thirty-three season.

   *   Brian Seymore at Trinity picked up the 150th victory of his career last week against Northside Methodist on the road in a 49-13 win for the Wildcats. His record in 20 seasons is 150-74.

   *   Cherokee County joined the exclusive 600 win club with 24-10 region win over Hokes Bluff Friday night.  The Warriors have a record of 600-439-30 since first fielding a football team back in 1920.

   *    Pike County won the 500th game in school history this week as they traveled to Straughn on Friday night and came away with a 34-28 win.  The Bulldogs have an overall record of 500-399-18 since 1923. One note here is they did not field a football team between 1934-1945.
