2025 Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The AHSAA Super 7 matchups are set.  It's on to Birmingham for fourteen teams.  Here are a few tidbits to keep you updated until Wednesday.

   *   The AHSFHS Podcast is uploaded for our listeners.  Join us as we preview all the Super 7 games and give our predictions.

   *   Look for the Barber Shop Guru predictions on Tuesday along with the usual content at AHSFHS.org.  The guys went 9-3 last week and will be analyzing and predicting every game this week.  You can still test your luck in beating them by joining us in the forums one final time.

   *   As always we will be tracking all the coaching changes during the off season.  Find a link on the homepage to get a glimpse into each change. So far we have twenty-six schools looking in a different direction or coaches retiring from the sidelines.

   *   The AHSFHS Power Ratings predicted the winner of eleven of the twelve games in the semi-finals last week.  Not bad for a computer. The only miss was Vigor defeating Williamson.

   *   Flag football will also be playing on Wednesday afternoon in Birmingham. Central Phenix City has a 57 game winning streak going.
6A/7A     Central Phenix City (19-0) vs. Vestavia Hills (28-1)
              1A/5A     Catholic Montgomery (21-4) vs. Moody (21-3)

   *   Last week saw seven previously undefeated teams lose their hopes of a perfect season. The remaining six undefeated teams:
             7A - None
             6A - Clay-Chalkville (14-0), Saraland (13-0)
             5A - None
             4A - Anniston (14-0)
             3A - Mars Hill (14-0)
             2A - None
             1A - Maplesville (14-0), Wadley (13-0)

   *   Undefeated teams in Super 7: We have six this year. Last year saw only three. There were nine in 2023 which was the most ever and eight in 2007.

   *   As far as seeding is concerned, only one #3 seed has survived. Class 7A Opelika. There are two #2 seeds. Class 5A Vigor and Class 4A Jackson.

   *   In the history of the AHSAA State Championship playoffs there have been 130 different schools that have captured state titles.  Of the remaining teams we have four that have never won a state football championship in the AHSAA: Opelika, Moody, Bayside Academy and Coosa Christian.

   *   Three coaches have an opportunity to win a championship in their first season as a head coach at their current school. Renardo Jackson at Vigor, Rush at Coosa and Dake Rivers at Wadley.  Congratulations to these coaches.

   *   Something to ponder.  Who are the past state champions who won every game by at least 20 points on their way to a Blue Map? Maplesville and Mars Hill have a chance this year. Previously this was accomplished by only three teams: 2019 Fyffe, 2016 Maplesville and 1968 Lowndes Academy.

   *   We have one rematch from last year with Maplesville taking on defending champs Wadley.  Since 2000 there have been seven rematches from the previous season in the Super 7.  Only once did a team win both games and that was in 2016-2017 when Hoover defeated McGill-Toolen in back-to-back seasons.  The other six rematches saw the the roles reversed as the loser from the previous season came out victorious.  Those rematches occurred in 2001 in games between Benjamin Russell and Homewood, 2001 Daphne and Hoover, 2009 Hoover and Prattville, 2015 Elba and Fyffe, 2019 Thompson and Central Phenix City and 2024 between Thompson and Central Phenix City.

   *   A look at state champions by District.  The AHSAA divided the state into eight districts back in 1923. 1=Mobile/Baldwin, 2=Dothan/ Wiregrass, 3=Montgomery, 4=Auburn/Opelika, 5= Birmingham/Tuscaloosa, 6= Anniston/Gadsden, 7=Florence/NW, 8=Huntsville/NE.  Below is a breakdown of the 330 state championship teams by District since 1966, 2000 and the last ten years.

District 1966 2000 2015
1 18% 25% 26%
2 9% 14% 6%
3 14% 6% 13%
4 5% 6% 9%
5 17% 23% 23%
6 13% 11% 14%
7 16% 6% 4%
8 8% 11% 9%

   *   The list below breaks down the state champions by District. Some Districts fared much better than others the past ten seasons.

   *   Over the past eleven seasons since Class 7A started the North holds an 8-3 advantage in the title games.

   *   In Class 6A the North has an 8-2 advantage in championship games won the past ten seasons. In 5A the South has dominated the past 14 years by winning eleven of the fourteen games.  In Class 4A the South has won the past twelve state championships and are 22-3 since 2000.  In Class 3A the North leads 6-4 the past ten years.  In 2A the North also leads 7-3 with five of those belonging to Fyffe. And lastly in 1A, the South leads 8-2.

   *   Wadley has the state's longest winning streak currently at twenty-six games. The Bulldogs had a little trouble in defeating Addison 22-14 to advance to the title game.

   *   Saraland, ranked #2 in 6A, has reeled off a string of 41 consecutive home victories.  The Spartans will retain that record until next season.

   *   Saraland also has the longest away winning streak with 17 consecutive road wins.  The Supr 7 games do not count as away games since they are played at a neutral site.

   *   Clay-Chalkville extended their string of consecutive games scoring to 280 last week.  T.R. Miller tops the all-time list with at 354 games.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
