2025 Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The 7A finals are set. The other six classes will be playing semi-final games this week. Here are a few tidbits from the third round.

   *   The AHSFHS Podcast is uploaded for our listeners.  A look back at last week's action and a preview of every semi-final game with our predictions.

   *   Look for the Barber Shop Guru predictions on Tuesday along with the usual content at AHSFHS.org.  The guys went 9-3 last week and will be analyzing and predicting every game this week.  You can still test your luck in beating them by joining us in the forums.

   *   As always we will be tracking all the coaching changes during the off season.  Find a link on the homepage to get a glimpse into each change. So far we have twenty-six schools looking in a different direction or coaches retiring from the sidelines.

   *   The AISA finished up their season with some great games in Montgomery on Thursday. Shout out to these state champions.
AAA - Chambers Academy 32-14 Lowndes Academy
AA - Abbeville Christian 50-28 South Choctaw Academy
               A - Macon-East Academy 34-14 Escambia Academy

   *   Flag football will also be playing their semi-final games this week. Central Phenix City is the Number One team in the Nation and 18-0 on the season.
6A/7A    Central Phenix City vs. Smiths Station
                          Vestavia Hills vs. Spain Park
              1A/5A     Brewbaker Tech vs. Marbury
                           Boaz vs. Moody

   *   Last week saw three previously undefeated teams lose their hopes of a perfect season. The remaining thirteen undefeated teams:
             7A - None
             6A - Clay-Chalkville (13-0), Muscle Shoals (12-0), Saraland (12-0)
             5A - Williamson (12-0)
             4A - Anniston (13-0), Plainview (13-0), St. Michael (13-0)
             3A - Mars Hill (13-0), Piedmont (13-0), Southside Selma (13-0)
             2A - None
             1A - Leroy (13-0), Maplesville (13-0), Wadley (12-0)
             AISA - Macon-East Academy (13-0)

   *   The 13 undefeated teams are the most ever still playing in the semi-finals. Last year saw just seven. In 2023 we had eleven. In 2022 we only saw three teams reach the semis with an unblemished record. Back in 2007 we had twelve undefeated teams make the semi-finals which was the record until this year.

   *   What a great week of football action!  Congratulations the the coaches and players who are still practicing during the Thanksgiving break.

   *   Dominant wins:  Saraland jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 56-32 victory.  Anniston took care of Deshler 31-7.  Mars Hill dominated from the opening kick in defeating Geraldine 42-0.

   *   More statement wins.  Jackson proved their first win over W.S. Neal was no fluke as they duplicated the effort in a convincing 50-7 win over the Eagle.  Benjamin Russell fell behind 7-0 early but it was all Wildcats afterwards as the beat Hueytown 40-13.

   *   Upset winners.  Lanett, Leroy, Saraland and Opelika.  I'm just not sure any of these games were actual upsets at this point in the season.

   *   Biggest comeback wins. Scottsboro needed a 31 yard FG with just 1:25 remaining to hold off Fairview 16-14 on Thursday night.

   *   Close games?  Thompson needed a stop on a 2-point try to hold off Central Phenix City 35-34 in a thriller.  Piedmont got past Gordo 28-20 in a tight contest throughout.

   *   Close games at the half that did not end that way?  Williamson trailed Catholic Montgomery 10-7 at the half before pulling away to win 41-10.  Montgomery Academy led 13-7 at the half before Bayside Academy caught fire to comeback for a 30-13 victory.

   *   The AHSAA Power Ratings went 22-4 last week.  The misses were Saraland over Pike Road, Opelika over Auburn, Leroy over McKenzie and Lanett over Luverne.

   *   Only one #3 seed remains.  That would be the Opelika Bulldogs. Three #2 seeds are still standing. Vigor, Jackson and Reeltown. Those three will all be facing rematches with the region champions who knocked them off during the regular season.

   *   Twenty-two #1 seeds advanced to the semi-finals.  That is tied for the most all-time in the AHSAA with the 2020 football season.  Last year saw eighteen #1 seeds get this far in the playoffs.

   *   130 different schools have won a playoff state championship since the playoffs began in 1966.

   *   Eleven schools remaining have never won a playoff state championship. Pisgah, Coosa Christian, Southside-Selma, Bayside Academy, Plainview, St. Michael, Scottsboro, Moody, Muscle Shoals, Williamson and Opelika.  Which one or ones will get that first trophy in 2025?

   *   We will have four games with both teams entering the game undefeated.  In 6A Muscle Shoals vs. Clay-Chalkville, 4A Plainview vs. Anniston, 3A Mars Hill vs. Piedmont and in 1A Leroy vs. Maplesville.

   *   The 7A state championship game matchup is set with Thompson taking on Opelika on Wednesday evening December 3rd at 7pm.

   *   Scottsboro, Southside Selma and St. Michael have never won a semi-final playoff game.

   *   Two teams have never hosted a semi-final game but will this week. They are Scottsboro and St. Michael.

   *   Wadley has the state's longest winning streak currently at twenty-five games. The Bulldogs had a little trouble in defeating Hubbertville 62-38 but came on strong late in the game.

   *   Saraland, ranked #2 in 6A, has reeled off a string of 40 consecutive home victories.  The Spartans will be back at home this week as they will entertain the Benjamin Russell Wildcats.

   *   Saraland also has the longest away winning streak with 17 consecutive road wins after knocking off Pike Road 56-32.

   *   Clay-Chalkville extended their string of consecutive games scoring to 279 last week.  T.R. Miller tops the all-time list with at 354 games.

   *   Plainview's Dale Pruitt picked up the 300th win of his storied career in Alabama. He was also 32-23 in Georgia and Tennessee as a head football coach. In forty-four years as a head coach his record stands at 332-170. Over 500 games on the sidelines for Coach Pruitt and his team is still playing football at Thanksgiving.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
