Second Round of the Playoffs Tidbits & Records

On to the quarterfinals for everyone except 7A who will be playing semi-final games this week. Here are a few tidbits from the second round.

   *   The AHSFHS Podcast is uploaded for our listeners. This week we look at last week's action and preview every third round game in the AHSAA. This week TP and I will announce our team and coach of the year for each classification.

   *   Look for the Barber Shop Guru predictions on Tuesday along with the usual content at AHSFHS.org. The guys will be analyzing and predicting playoff games this week. You can still test your luck in beating them by joining us in the forums.

   *   The AISA will be playing for state championships this week in Montgomery on Thursday. The games will be at the Cramton Bowl. Get out and support these programs and schools.
               AAA - Chambers Academy (11-2) vs. Lowndes Academy (10-2)
               AA - Abbeville Christian (11-1) vs. South Choctaw Academy (8-4)
               A - Macon-East Academy (12-0) vs. Escambia Academy (11-1)

   *   Undefeated teams are getting fewer as the weeks progress. The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - None
     6A - Clay-Chalkville (12-0), Muscle Shoals (11-0), Saraland (11-0)
       5A - Fairview (12-0), Williamson (11-0)
       4A - Anniston (12-0), Plainview (12-0), St. Michael (12-0)
       3A - Mars Hill (12-0), Piedmont (12-0), Southside Selma (12-0)
       2A - Luverne (12-0)
       1A - Hubbertville (12-0), Leroy (12-0), Maplesville (12-0), McKenzie (12-0), Wadley (11-0)
       AISA - Macon-East Academy (12-0)

   *   The top story of the second round had to be Good Hope taking down 14 point favorite West Morgan 31-7. Not necessarily that the Raiders won but how they dominated an excellent West Morgan team.

   *   Dominant wins: Auburn shutout Daphne 40-0. Thompson is in championship form it seems as they also shutout Mary Montgomery 54-0. Moody destroyed Priceville 60-14. Piedmont shut out Fyffe 36-0.

   *   More statement wins. Anniston defeated Madison Academy 44-12. Glenwood took out Trinity 40-7. Mars Hill had little trouble with Winfield 42-6. Wadley moved on with a convincing 52-6 win over Meek.

   *   Upset victories. Southern Choctaw knocked off 16 point favorite University Charter School 26-12. Providence Christian took down favored Loachapoka. Marion County upset the championship hopes of Appalachian 28-13.

   *   Biggest comeback wins. Muscle Shoals overcame a 14-7 deficit at the half to knock off defending 6A champs Parker 17-14. Saraland trailed Spain Park 17-14 at the half but came back for a 35-31 win late.

   * Close games? Deshler got past undefeated Hamilton 31-30 by blocking an extra point in overtime. Providence Christian outlasted Loachapoka 17-14 also in overtime. Benjamin Russell stopped Theodore on fourth down at the eleven yard line with 12 seconds remaining to win 21-14.

   *   Close games at the half that did not end that way? Vigor led Northside 21-14 at the half but won 49-28. Pisgah led Vincent 22-21 at the half and pulled away for a 44-33 win. Hueytown and Russell County were tied at 21 going into the halftime break but put the Warriors away in the second half 49-29.

   *   In Class 3A all eight Number One seeds advance to the quarterfinals. In Class 6A and 5A seven #1 seeds advance.

   *   In 7A we will have three teams from region two in the semi-finals this week. In 6A only Mountain Brook is not a #1 seed. The same is true for Vigor in 5A.

   *   In Class 4A three teams from region one advanced. Jackson, W.S. Neal and St. Michael.

   *   Only one No. 4 seed advances to the quarterfinals and that team is Providence Christian. The Eagles have defeated Clark County and Loachapoka to get here this week.

   *  The best quarterfinal matchups I would most like to see; Homewood (11-1) at Clay-Chalkville (12-0), Anniston (12-0) at Deshler (11-1), Geraldine (11-1) at Mars Hill (12-0), Hubbertville (12-0) at Wadley (12-0) and Leroy (12-0) at McKenzie (12-0).

   *   Bullock County is the only team remaining who has never played in the quarterfinals previously.

   *   Bullock County and Southeastern are the teams who have never won a quarterfinals game.

   *   Teams who have never hosted a quarterfinal game but will this week are St. Michael and Southeastern.

   *   Teams with great home records in the quarterfinals round who will be hosting a playoff game this week: Mars Hill (3-0), Maplesville (14-3), Piedmont (8-2) and Catholic Montgomery (3-0).

   *   Wadley has the state's longest winning streak currently at twenty-four games. The Bulldogs had little trouble in defeating Meek 56-8.

   *   Saraland, ranked #2 in 6A, has reeled off a string of 40 consecutive home victories. The Spartans knocked off Spain Park at home to extend that streak but will not play another home game this season. What a streak for the Spartans.

   *   Saraland also has the longest away winning streak with 16 consecutive road wins.

   *   The Red Devils of Fyffe were sitting on a string of 343 games without being shutout. That is until last week when Piedmont ended the amazing streak. Currently that streak belongs to Clay-Chalkville with a string of 278 consecutive games scoring. T.R. Miller tops the all-time list with at 354 games.
