First Round of the Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The first round of the playoffs are history. It's about to get real folks. Grab your cup of coffee and a donut. Here are a few tidbits from the first round games.

   *   The AHSFHS Podcast is uploaded for our listeners.  This week we look at last week's action and preview every second round game in the AHSAA.  Join us for another information packed episode and hang around as we pass out helmet stickers to deserving teams.

   *   The playoff brackets are set.  They can be found on the homepage and are printable.

   *   Look for the Barber Shop Guru predictions on Tuesday along with the usual content at AHSFHS.org.  The guys will be analyzing and predicting first round playoff games this week.  You can still test your luck in beating them by joining us in the forums.

   *   Undefeated teams are getting fewer as the weeks progress. The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - None
       6A - Clay-Chalkville (11-0), Muscle Shoals (10-0), Saraland (10-0)
       5A - Fairview (11-0),  Northside (11-0), Williamson (10-0)
       4A - Anniston (11-0), Hamilton (11-0), Plainview (11-0), St. Michael (11-0), West Morgan (11-0)
       3A - Mars Hill (11-0), Piedmont (11-0), Southside Selma (11-0)
       2A - Luverne (11-0)
       1A - Appalachian (11-0), Hubbertville (11-0), Leroy (11-0), Maplesville (11-0), McKenzie (11-0), Wadley (10-0)
       AISA - Patrician Academy (11-0), Macon-East Academy (11-0)

   *   The top story of the first round had to be the number of overtime games in the first round.  There were a total of six with five of those coming in 5A. That's a lot of exciting finishes.

   *   Biggest comeback wins. Pelham led 21-7 at the half before Hueytown mounted a comeback to tie the game at 28 at the end of regulation and eventually won 35-28 in overtime.  Andalusia led 15-0 at the half before UMS-Wright rallied to tie the game sending this one into overtime also.  The Bulldogs of Andalusia won 28-25 on a field goal.

   *   Dominant wins:  The Baker Hornets advance to the second round with a convincing 38-14 victory over Florence.  Mary Montgomery knocked off Austin 45-7, Briarwood took care of Leeds 28-3, Williamson continues to roll as the beat Eufaula 50-14.  Anniston destroyed Fultondale 29-8. In 1A Maplesville and Wadley continue to run over teams as they head for a rematch in Birmingham.

   *   More statement wins.  University Charter defeated Notasulga 54-14.  Loachapoka shutout Goshen 47-0.  Lanett took down Zion Chapel 42-6.

   *   Upset victories.  Jacksonville, a 20 point underdog, knocked off Ramsay 14-7. Bullock County continued their greatest season ever run with a 21-7 win over Oak Grove.  Marion County, a 14 point underdog took down Winterboro.  Opelika shocked favored Hewitt-Trussville 27-21.

   *  Comeback wins?  Guntersville led Priceville 21-7 with less than three minutes remaining in the game before the Bulldogs scored twice, the last touchdown coming with five seconds remaining. The tow-point try tied the game and Priceville won it on a field goal in overtime.

   *  More comeback wins.  Russellville came back from a touchdown down in the fourth quarter to take out Boaz 29-28 in overtime.  Russell County scored with 8 seconds remaining to defeat Gulf Shores 33-30.

   *   In Class 6A all eight #1 and #2  seeds advance.  It is the sixteenth time that all of the top seeds have advanced in any classification.

   *   With the AHSAA setting the matchups for 7A differently this season only one team north of Montgomery will continue to practice this week as the Thompson Warriors are the lone team remaining.

   *   In Class 2A all the region two teams advanced.  The same thing happened with the Class 4A region one teams as they too move on to the second round.

   *   Only three No. 4 seeds advance to the second round, Daphne, Mobile Christian and Providence Christian.

   *  The best quarterfinal matchups I would most like to see; Hartselle (10-1) at Homewood (10-1), Vigor (9-2) at Northside (11-0), Alexandria (10-1) at Plainview (11-0), Westbrook Christian (10-1) at Geraldine (10-1) and Fyffe (8-2) at Piedmont (11-0).

   *   Teams reaching the second round who have never played in the second round previously include: Bullock County, Pleasant Valley and University Charter School.

   *   Including those three schools, teams who have never won a second round game: Baker, Cottage Hill Christian, Priceville, Russell County and Vincent.

   *   Teams who have never hosted a second round game but will this week include; Baker, St. Michael, Southside Selma, Providence Christian and University Charter School.

   *   Teams with great home records in the second round who will be hosting a playoff game this week: Briarwood (10-4), Handley (7-1), Anniston (7-1), Lanett (13-3), Piedmont (11-2) and Leroy (11-3).

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 187 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season. The Red Devils are ranked #7 this week in Class 3A.

   *   Wadley has the state's longest winning streak currently at twenty-three games. The Bulldogs had little trouble in defeating Meek 56-8.

   *   Saraland, ranked #2 in 6A, has reeled off a string of 39 consecutive home victories.  The Spartans knocked off Wetumpka 49-24 at home to extend that streak and will be back on their home field as they entertain Spain Park this week in the second round.

   *   Saraland also has the longest away winning streak with 16 consecutive road wins.

   *   The Red Devils of Fyffe are currently sitting on a string of 343 games without being shutout.  T.R. Miller tops this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Keith Etheredge picked up the 200th victory of his twenty year career on Friday night with a great comeback win over Vestavia Hills.  Coach Etheredge won state championships at Leeds and Oxford before landing in Auburn the past five seasons.  His overall record stands at 200-63.

   *   The Piedmont Bulldogs won the 600th game in program history in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs are 600-420-30 since first fielding a football team back in 1924.
