Week Ten Tidbits & Records

The 2025 football season is winding down as some teams have completed their regular seasons while others are preparing for a playoff run. Here are a few tidbits from this past week's games.

   *   The AHSFHS Podcast is uploaded for our listeners.  This week we take a look at the playoff matchups for all 52 regions from 7A down to 1A.  Join me along with Kurt and TP for a look at the playoff implications and pass out a few helmet stickers.

   *   Most of the playoff brackets are set.  Only a few regions are dealing with tiebreaker situations which will be resolved after this week's game hopefully.  No coin flips please.

   *   Look for the Barber Shop Guru predictions on Tuesday along with the usual content at AHSFHS.org.  The guys did well last week with a record of 9-3.  You can test your luck in beating them by joining us in the forums.

   *   No out-of-state games last week with a few more to be played the last week of the regular season. Here is how our great state stacks up thus far. Overall the AHSAA schools are 24-16 against other states.  Here are the records against neighboring states.  Georgia (4-6), Florida (12-10), Mississippi (7-0), Tennessee (1-0) and South Carolina (1-0).  There are a handful of out of state games on the slate this coming week.

   *   Dominant wins:  Baker claimed their first region championship since 1989 with a 35-10 victory over Fairhope.  The Hornets led 21-3 at the half and never looked back.  Geraldine knocked off perennial power Fyffe for the second time in the last three tries by a score of 17-6.

   *   More statement wins.  Southside Selma had no trouble with Thorsby as the Panthers thrashed them 74-22 to claim their first region crown since 1989.  Plainview broke open a close game and outscored Madison Academy 49-27. The Bears lead was 21-14 in the third quarter.

   *   More impressive victories. Northside proved a few doubters wrong as they left little doubt in a 48-14 victory over Demopolis.  W.S. Neal grabbed a playoff spot with an impressive win over Mobile Christian 35-22.  Wadley continued to roll in a 49-13 win over Winterboro to wrap up another region championship.

   *  It would not be high school football if we did not have a few upsets each week.  Pleasant Grove, a 17 point underdog, overcame Bibb County 49-46 in a wild one.  Blount upset St. Paul's and their playoff hopes by a score of 34-28.

   *  Comeback wins?  Sparkman was a 13 point underdog to Florence and scored on a short run in the final minute to pull off the upset.  Auburn was down to Dothan 20-17 at the half before rallying for a 39-26 win.  Muscle Shoals fell behind Hartselle 14-0 early before making a tremendous comeback in a huge game to win 31-17.  Thompson was down 15-14 to Prattville before rallying for a 29-15 win.

   *  Close games?  Catholic Montgomery beat Andalusia in overtime by a score of 23-17.  Gadsden City beat Mae Jemison 13-12 on a last second 30 yard field goal Thursday night.

   *   Do you appreciate defense?  How about Central Clay County's 6-3 win over Pell City?  Cottage Hill beat Flomaton 13-7 in a close game.

   *   Carver Birmingham upset Corner 34-26 and that is the first victory over a ranked team since 1994.  It also knocked Corner out of claiming a region championship.

   *   How about the Trail Blazers of University Charter School. In only their fourth year in the AHSAA they are region champs in 1A.  They are also in the playoff for the third straight season with an 8-1 record.  Coach Sam Mosley has done a great job in Livingston.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 185 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season. The Red Devils were ranked #3 last week in Class 3A but fell to Geraldine 17-6 on Friday.

   *   Wadley has the state's longest winning streak currently at twenty-three games. The Bulldogs knocked off Winterboro 49-13 to win a region title.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 100 straight setbacks. The Eagles fell to Jasper 61-22. They hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   Demopolis owned a string of 32 consecutive region victories until Friday night. The Tigers were defeated by Northside 48-14 to see their streak come to an end.  The longest region winning streak now belongs to Clarke County with a string of 28 straight region wins.

   *   Columbia has also lost 61 consecutive region games.

   *   West Morgan has won 33 straight regular season games following the Rebels win over Wilson by a score of 42-7.

   *   Saraland, ranked #2 in 6A, has reeled off a string of 38 consecutive home victories.  The Spartans beat a good Theodore team 38-14 at home to extend that streak.

   *   Saraland also has the longest away winning streak with 16 consecutive road wins. They finish the season with four straight home games and will not be back on the road until the playoffs

   *   The Red Devils of Fyffe are currently sitting on a string of 342 games without being shutout.  T.R. Miller tops this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Coach Stacy Luker at South Choctaw Academy won the 250th game as a head coach in Alabama.  His coaching career spans 29 seasons at six different schools with a record of 250-106.
