Week One Tidbits & Records

The 2025 season in underway with an almost full schedule of games. Here are a few tidbits from this past week's games.

   *   Thanks to all the fans who constantly work to assist us with this project throughout the year. There are too many to thank here but your contributions are important.

   *   The AHSAA Kickoff Classic saw Pike Road defeat Prattville 21-14 and Maplesville stop Fyffe by a score of 35-6.

   *   There were some excellent interstate matchups to open the 2025 football season. On Thursday Moody fell to Gainesville GA 49-7. The Hoover Bucs came up short to IMG Academy 34-13. Oxford hosted Central Carrolton, Georgia in a rematch of a great game played last year but lost 37-34. In the win column were Mary Montgomery over Pace FL 34-21, Vestavia Hills topping powerhouse Westside SC 49-7 and Dothan over Chiles FL 42-17.

   *  Great games across the state included: Thompson over Carver 37-6, Opelika 25-20 over Benjamin Russell, Saraland toppled Jackson in the rain 17-6, Clay-Chalkville showed they would be a top tier team in 6A with an impressive 42-15 victory over Hueytown.

   *  A few games were not close from the opening kickoff. McAdory beat Pleasant Grove 57-7 and St. Clair County throttled Jemison 61-21.

   *  A few surprising scores included: Leroy 52-34 over Thomasville, Cold Springs 65-7 Hanceville, Luverne 56-0 Elba, Oneonta 58-13 Locust Fork, Central Tuscaloosa 45-13 Tuscaloosa County and Homewood 51-7 John Carroll. Its not the wins for the teams but the actual margin of victory for each.

   *  Upsets? Yea, we had a few. Maplesville 35-6 over Fyffe was an mild upset in my opinion and according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings. Leroy over Thomasville, 1A Fayetteville knocking off 3A Childersburg 35-28, Ashford over Rehobeth 32-15 and Clements over West Limestone 21-14. All these teams were at least two touchdown underdogs.

   *  The first week always provides a bunch of upsets as teams often play across classifications so a few top ten teams saw their hopes of a perfect season fall by the wayside. No less than 20 ranked teams lost in week one. Half of the 2A and 4A ranked squads fell.

   *  And we even had a tie game for the first time since 2013 when Chambers Academy and Springwood fought to a 14-14 stalemate. Cottonwood and Randolph County GA tried to play through the weather but were forced to call the game at midnight due to lightning in the area. They tied 14-14. The last tie game involving an AHSAA school was in 2012 when Russell County also tied a Georgia school in Northside 14-14. There have been no tie games since 1984 among AHSAA schools that did not involve a team from another state. There have been eight involving interstate schools.

   *  Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 176 consecutive polls dating back to the 2009 season. The Red Devils opened the 2025 season as the #3 team in 3A and lost to an excellent Maplesville team 35-6 in the AHSAA Kickoff Classic.

   *   Catholic Montgomery began the 2025 football season with a solid 32-6 victory over St. James to extend the state's longest winning streak to thirty games. Reeltown is well behind them them with a 15 game streak.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 92 straight contests following a 53-6 loss to Priceville. They now hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   Catholic Montgomery has a streak of 40 consecutive region wins. The Knights open region play in a couple of weeks. Demopolis (28) and Reeltown (23) are the next two schools with long region winning streaks.

   *   Columbia has lost 55 consecutive region games but do not begin region play until next week.

   *  The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 44 straight regular season games. Central Clay County is behind with a string of 27 consecutive regular season wins.

   *   Saraland, ranked #3 in 6A, entered the 2025 season with a string of 33 consecutive home wins. The Spartans will host Gulf Shores on their home field in week three.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 28 consecutive road games. Their first away game is against St. Clair County on 8/29.

   *   Clay-Chalkville has won 15 consecutive season openers following a 42-15 win over Hueytown on the road.

   *   Sylvania was shutout for the first time in 64 games following a 20-0 loss to North Jackson.

   *   Fyffe was in danger of seeing their consecutive games scoring streak come to an end Friday night. They are currently sitting on a string of 334 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Congratulation go to J.F. Shields for snapping a 32 game losing streak with a 24-12 victory over Wilcox Central. Also Curry put a stop to a 14 game losing streak. Congratulation to Coach Cordell and the Yellow Jackets. Lastly Ider broke a 17 game losing streak by knocking off Section 19-13.

   *   The Fort Payne Wildcats made history Friday night as they defeated Scottsboro 21-19 for the 600th win in school history. They have a record of 600-411-20 since first fielding a football team back in 1922.

   *   Addison also won the 600th game in school history with a surprising 41-20 victory over Winston County. The Bulldogs have amassed an overall record of 600-309-13 since 1928. Congratulations Bulldogs under first year head coach Mark Hastings.

   *   Ten coaches will be in search of their 100th win as a head football coach once the season opens. All have over 90 victories during their careers. Other coaches are within reach of several different milestones this season.
