2022 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tuscaloosa Academy completed the 2021 season with a 7-5 record. Last year Tuscaloosa Academy captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class AAA playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. Last year the Tuscaloosa Academy Knights reached the AISA-AAA State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Pike Liberal Arts in the State Championship game 41-21 in Troy. Since 2010, Tuscaloosa Academy has gone a combined 82-49. Their 62.6% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 2A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Tuscaloosa Academy has managed to compile a record of 135-130. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 2A and 175th in the AHSAA. The Knights are led by head coach Josh Wright who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-5 record in his first season at Tuscaloosa Academy. The Knights saw improvement from a 3-7 record the season before coach Wright arrived. Under his direction the Knights have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Wright. Coach Wright's overall record as a head football coach in fourteen season stands at 138-42 (76.7%). His 138 wins rank 33rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Wright's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times and won nine region championships. Coach Wright won four state championships prior to arriving at Tuscaloosa Academy, the last coming in 2019 at Bessemer Academy. The Tuscaloosa Academy Knights will play in Class 2A region five during the 2022 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Knights could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season. Unfortunately, Tuscaloosa Academy finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. The Knights open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Holy Spirit on Friday, August 19 at Knights Stadium. Tuscaloosa Academy and Holy Spirit have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Knights have a 2-0-0 record against the Saints.
