2022 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Handley completed the 2021 season with a 9-3 record. Last year Handley captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-1 record. Handley lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Jackson team by a score of 24-23. Over the past two seasons the Tigers have gone 21-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Handley has gone a combined 96-48. Their 66.7% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 4A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Handley has managed to compile a record of 188-105. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 4A and 67th in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Larry Strain who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 56-28 over the past seven seasons at Handley. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Strain. Coach Strain has won two state championships at Handley, the last coming in 2020. Coach Strain's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-three season stands at 158-114 (58.1%). His 158 wins rank 24th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Strain's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eighteen times and won five region championships. The Handley Tigers will play in Class 4A region four during the 2022 season. The Tigers should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Tigers open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Valley on Friday, August 19 at Wright Field. Last year the Valley Rams finished with an overall record of 4-5 and in sixth place in Class 6A region two. Handley and Valley have met a total of 39 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 10-29-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2005 with Handley winning by a score of 25-6. Handley returns 4A All-State Senior defensive back Jordan West. He was named to the second team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
