Week Three Tidbits & Records

Region play began this week for most teams. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  This week we will introduce a couple of new items on AHSFHS.org for this season. The scoring averages for every team will be available Sunday. If you missed any of the action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.

   *  For the first time ever, AFHSHS.org will give the fans a Power Ratings Top Ten each week throughout the remainder of the 2022 football season. The rankings will be based on our unique Power Ratings for each week. Look for it on the homepage Sunday.

   *  Following last week's record number of upsets in the ASWA top ten this week saw things settle back down. Thirteen ranked teams lost this week and six of those losses were to other ranked schools.

   *  Region play began for most teams this week. The biggest region game was at Asbury as Brindlee Mountain defeated Asbury 52-28 to break a string of 56 consecutive region losses for the Lions. Brindlee Mountain is off to a 2-1 start in 2022. One more victory this season will tie the school record for wins in a season.

   *  There is something happening on the Gulf Coast if you have not noticed. Gulf Shores is 3-0 and Orange Beach is 2-0. The Makos of Orange Beach defeated Jackson 31-14 and Gulf Shores knocked off Faith Academy 22-12. The win for Orange Beach was the first ever over a ranked school. Gulf Shores travels to UMS-Wright next week for a huge contest.

   *  Following a couple of tough losses to powerhouse schools in LaGarange GA and Central Phenix City, Smiths Station shocked Prattville 30-21 Friday night. It is their first victory over a ranked team since the 2013 football season.

   *  411 football is catching fire. If you are unfamiliar with the term you will hear a lot more in the future. The Moody Blue Devils are living up to preseason expectations and have rolled to a 3-0 record following a 42-27 victory over #9 Alexandria.

   *  Fairhope, for the third week in a row, pulled out a game in the final minutes by knocking off Choctawhatchee FL 43-39. The Pirates seem to prefer winning late.

   *  Last minute dramatic wins anyone? Pike Road scored on a 72-yard TD pass with 51 seconds remaining to defeat Wetumpka 35-33. For the second week in a row Briarwood's Christopher Vizzina leads the Lions to a last second win. He led the Lions on a 68 yard 6-play drive and scored on a 1-yard sneak with 8 seconds left for a 36-29 victory over Chilton County.

   *  More drama? Foley outscored Mary Montgomery 43-42 and won in overtime on a two-point conversion. Austin beat Sparkman 24-21 in overtime.

   *  Surprise teams of the 2022 season after three weeks. Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Benjamin Russell and Moody come to mind. Or you can take your pick of these schools.

Vincent - Off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2001. Leading the state in scoring offense.
Whitesburg Christian - 3-0 for the first time in the school's brief history. They have already matched their record for most wins in a season.
Elmore County - Also 3-0 on the season after going 0-10 last year.

   *  Madison County fell to Priceville 35-0. That is the first time the Tigers have failed to score in a game since 2009. A total of 144 games.

   *  Clay-Chalkville has scored at least 40 points in 17 of their last 18 games. The last two times they failed to put up at least forty points came against Mountain Brook. No surprise there.

   *  Did you notice? In the highest scoring game of the week Locust Fork outscored Holly Pond 73-37. Luverne ran over Barbour County 75-0.

   *  Alabama teams are a combined 16-20 vs. out-of-state competition. They were 4-12 against Georgia, 8-3 vs. Florida, 3-1 vs. Tennessee and 1-4 against Mississippi.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 251 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs defeated rival Spain Park 24-10.

   *  The Clay-Chalkville Cougars have begun the 2022 football season by extending the state's longest winning streak at eighteen straight games. The Cougars knocked off Pell City 58-0.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 65 straight contests. They fell to Muscle Shoals 68-0. Columbia could surpass the state's longest losing streak in history held by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row. The Eagles have allowed at least 38 points in 38 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 football season.

   *   Lanett has a streak of 34 consecutive region wins. The Panthers opened region play on the road by beating Horseshoe Bend 39-6 Friday night. American Christian (29) and Mars Hill (27) are the next two schools with long region winning streaks.

   *   Brindlee Mountain had lost 56 consecutive region games prior to their big win this week. Barbour County has lost 52 straight region contests and will assume the top of this list.

   *   The Brantley Bulldogs with a string of 27 consecutive regular season wins top that list. Brantley defeated McKenzie 42-6.

   *   Thompson had the longest home winning streak until last week. Spring Garden held onto the top spot for one week before falling to Wadley 9-0. Clay-Chalkville takes the lead having won 16 straight at home.

   *   Guntersville holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 13 consecutive road games. The Wildcats shutout Crossville 64-0 Friday night at home.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 293 games after beating North Sand Mountain by a score of 49-0. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.
