Week SevenTidbits & Records


The region races are in full swing and coming down to the wire. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings Top Ten and the scoring averages for every team will be available by Sunday. If you missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.

   *  The biggest upset this week was James Clemens coming to life and defeating Sparkman 41-17. The Senators were 24 point favorites over the Jets.

   *  The biggest games of the week were also huge region games. Thompson held on the defeat Hewitt-Trussville 14-12 and Auburn defeated Opelika 51-29. Anniston surprised Handley 32-7 and Hartselle knocked off Muscle Shoals 29-26.

   *  Eighteen ranked teams lost this week but nine of those losses were to other ranked schools. The biggest upset had to be Foley's come from behind 39-38 win over #2 Fairhope. Go Lions! Another surprise was Scottsboro beating Guntersville 17-14.

   *  Ohatchee was shutout by Geraldine 28-0. It was the first time in 108 games the Indians did not score a point in a game.

   *  As mentioned, Foley defeated Fairhope. It is their first victory over a ranked team since the 2015 football season. Scottsboro's win was also their first victory over a ranked opponent since 2016.

   *  Want some close games? Spanish Fort held on the defeat St. Paul's 41-38 in three overtimes. Florence jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead before having to hang on to defeat Bob Jones 38-35.

   *  Southeastern is 6-0 on the season. It is their best start ever. Meek is 6-0 for the first time since 1986. Moody is 7-0 for the first time in school history. Highland Home is 7-0 for the first time since 1983.

   *  Gulf Shores (6-1) and Randolph (5-1) are both off to the best starts in any season ever.

   *  On the flip side of winning, Springville has started the 2022 season 0-65 and that is their worst start since 1961. Huffman is 0-7 for their worst start to a season since 1968

   *  Did you notice? Catholic Montgomery took out some major revenge on Montgomery Academy by thumping them 72-15. It is the largest margin to win a game ever.

   *  Alabama teams are a combined 27-35 vs. out-of-state competition. They were 8-15 against Georgia, 9-8 vs. Florida, 5-4 vs. Tennessee and 4-7 against Mississippi.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 255 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. Here are the other teams who have been ranked the most consecutive weeks in the polls.
           Piedmont - 158 weeks since 2009
           Fyffe - 148 weeks since 2009
           Central Phenix City - 103 week since 2014
           Gordo - 102 since 2014
           Thompson - 67 weeks since 2017
           Pinson Valley - 67 weeks since 2017
           Mountain Brook - 53 weeks since 2018 
          
   *  Three teams are tied for the lead with eight consecutive wins. Deshler, Beauregard and Moody have the longest winning streaks.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 68 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Decatur 65-0. Columbia could surpass the state's longest losing streak in history held by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row next week when the travel to Cullman. The Eagles have allowed at least 38 points in 41 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 football season.

   *   American Christian leads for most consecutive region victories with 32 straight wins. The Patriots defeated Dallas County 35-10 in a region game Friday night. Mars Hill (30) is next up.

   *   Barbour County has lost 55 straight region contests after losing to Daleville 64-19 in a region contest.

   *   Catholic Montgomery now leads the state with a streak of 21 consecutive regular season victories. Hartselle has won 20 straight regular season games.

   *   Clay-Chalkville saw their 17 straight home game winning streak remain intact. The Cougars had an open date this week.

   *   Guntersville saw their state leading road winning streak stopped at 15 games as they fell to Scottsboro. Catholic Montgomery now has the longest road winning streak at 13 games. Oneonta has won 12 straight on the road.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 297 games after beating Plainview 56-13. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Oxford can become the 33rd school to record their 600th win in two weeks when they take on Clay-Chalkville. They are off this week. The Yellow Jackets are 599-381-44 since starting their football program back in 1920.

 * Catholic Montgomery set a team record in a win 72-15 over Montgomery Academy tying the previous record set when they defeated Birmingham University 72-0 on 11/2/1957.

 * Hillcrest Tuscaloosa set a team record in a win 63-19 over Central Tuscaloosa breaking the previous record set in a victory over Brookwood 62-0 on 9/14/2018.

 * Susan Moore set a team record in a win 71-0 over Brindlee Mountain breaking the previous record set in a victory over Asbury 66-0 on 9/9/2022.

 * St. Michael set a team record in a win 49-41 over Orange Beach tying the previous record set when they defeated McIntosh 49-0 on 8/26/2021.

 * Brindlee Mountain set a team record in a 71-0 loss to Susan Moore breaking the previous record set in a loss to Fyffe 70-25 on 10/19/2007.

 * Montgomery Academy set a team record in a 72-15 loss to Catholic Montgomery breaking the previous record set in a loss to T.R. Miller 62-14 on 9/16/2011.

 * Park Crossing set a team record in a 52-8 loss to Pike Road breaking the previous record set in a victory over Blount 54-51 on 11/18/2016.

 * Orange Beach set a team record in a 49-41 loss to St. Michael tying the previous record set in a loss to St. Lukes 49-40 on 10/23/2020.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
