Semi-finals of 2022 Football Playoffs

The AHSAA Super Seven are set. Fourteen teams will be playing for a state championship in Auburn next week. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings and the scoring averages for every team will be available by Sunday. If you missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything. We will also have previews for all Super Seven game Sunday. Predictions will be posted Monday.

   *   And then there was one undefeated team remaining in the AHSAA. 2A - Fyffe (14-0)

   *  The Class 6A finals have Mountain Brook facing Saraland. The Spartans of Saraland avenged an early season loss to Theodore by a score of 21-6 to advance to their third championship game under Coach Jeff Kelly. They lost both times previously in 2014 and 2018. Mountain Brook won back-to-back titles in 1975 and 1976 and lost in the finals in 1996.

   *  In 5A, Ramsay returns to the Super Seven for the first time since winning a championship in 2016 with a 21-16 victory over Opelika. They will face Charles Henderson, the surprise team of 2022 in the finals. The Trojans won the 3A title in 1980 and lost to Oneonta 28-10 in 2013 in their only appearance in the Super Seven. Charles Henderson won just three games the past two seasons before their resurgence this year.

   *  Class 4A will see Andalusia against the Cherokee County Warriors. The Bulldogs of Andalusia finally got over the hump after losing in the semi-finals five of the past six years. It will be their first trip to the Super Seven. But they did win a playoff championship in 1977 and tied Athens for another in 1976. The Warriors lost in the finals in 1984, 2005 and 2008 before defeating Jackson 31-27 in 2013 for their first playoff championship.

   *  Piedmont, the powerhouse of 3A returns in search of their sixth championship under head coach Steve Smith. The Bulldogs will face off against St. James. This will be the Trojan's first trip to the championship event in the school's history.

   *  No surprise in 2A as Fyffe is back to being Fyffe once again. The Red Devils will be seeking their sixth championship in the past nine seasons and fourth in the past five years. They will need to defeat a talented B.B. Comer squad to achieve that goal. In their only appearance in the finals, the Tigers fell to Oneonta 6-0 in 1995.

   *  Familiar face will matchup in 1A as Leroy and Pickens County square off in the lowest classification. Both teams have been here before so they know what it takes to win a state championship. Pickens County defeated Coosa Christian 44-40 on the final play of the game to get the opportunity to make the trip to Auburn.

   *  Thompson and Piedmont will be the only teams defending their title from last season. The Warriors will be going for the coveted four peat against Auburn on Wednesday night.

   *  St. James set a school record by going 12-2 thus far this football season. Saraland tied the school's best mark at 13-1.

   *   Of the 14 remaining teams, four have never won an AHSAA playoff state championship. Here are those schools hoping to bring home their first title.
           7A - Auburn
           6A - Saraland
           3A - St. James
           2A - B.B. Comer 
                     
   *  Fyffe is back on top with the state's longest winning streak with 13 consecutive victories.

   *  Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 305 games after beating Pisgah 41-14. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *  Safe travels to all the fans heading to Auburn this week. I hope the weather holds out and the games are great. Good luck to all the teams as they try to win a state championship for their hometowns.

 * Banks Academy set a team record with a 6-5 record. That ties the previous mark of 6-5-0 in 2021.

 * Catholic Montgomery set a team record with a 13-1 record. That ties the previous mark of 13-1-0 in 2021.

 * Chickasaw set a team record with a 7-4 record. That tops the previous mark of 6-4-0 in 2021.

 * Dothan High set a team record with a 8-4 record. That ties the previous mark of 8-3-0 in 2019.

 * Gulf Shores set a team record with a 11-2 record. That tops the previous mark of 9-3-0 in 2009.

 * Highland Home set a team record with a 12-2 record. That ties the previous mark of 12-2-0 in 2018.

 * Jackson Academy set a team record with a 12-1 record. That ties the previous mark of 12-1-0 in 2011.

 * Lee-Scott Academy set a team record with a 12-0 record. That ties the previous mark of 12-1-0 in 1994.

 * Lowndes Academy set a team record with a 11-2 record. That ties the previous mark of 11-3-0 in 2021.

 * Meek set a team record with a 11-1 record. That ties the previous mark of 11-2-0 in 1986.

 * Millry set a team record with a 12-2 record. That tops the previous mark of 11-1-0 in 2007.

 * Moody set a team record with a 10-2 record. That tops the previous mark of 9-4-0 in 2004.
