2022 Weekly Predictions

            Each week we will let you know how the Computer did and how many favorites won according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings. The Power Ratings are based upon past performance early in the season and will better reflect a team's strength as the football season progresses.

            Last week the AHSFHS.org Power Ratings had a record of 128-25 (83.7%) predicting the outcome of games. Fifteen of the games the computer missed were contests where the loser was favored by less than six points.

           The biggest upset was John Carroll defeating Maplesville after entering the game as a 17 point underdog. Games with such a difference in classifications are difficult to predict. Others included Cedar Bluff (+14) beating Donoho 34-0, Ranburne (+14) beating Randolph County and Athens (+13) defeating Russellville 32-31.

           Each week now the predicting will get tougher as teams are more evenly matched as each round of the playoffs progress. We do have a few upset predictions where fourth seeded teams are favored over number one seeded teams. Dothan High is favored by 6 over Foley. Vestavia Hills (+14) over Austin and Pike County (+1) over Excel. I do believe regions two and three could sweep 7A.

           Remember that teams are rewarded for performing better than expected. So a team from a lower classification losing to a team from a higher one will not be punished as much as a team losing to a team they are suppose to beat. Basically that means a team will move up by beating a team they are favored to beat by more than the predicted point spread. Another team will move up even if they lose, if they lose by less than the predicted spread.
