Semifinals of the AHSAA Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The Semifinals are complete. The 2023 AHSAA Super Seven Championships begin this coming Wednesday. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch the latest edition of the AHSFHS podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode with all four of the gang. Chris, Kody and TP will join Kurt and David to discuss the matchups this week. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Tuesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 9-3 predicting the games.

   *   All the official playoff brackets are posted as we get closer to crowning the 2023 football state champions. The AHSAA Super 7 begins Wednesday, December 6th in Tuscaloosa. We will have much more all week on the championship games.

   *   Sunday we will unveil the latest AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our predictions each championship game. Scoring averages are posted now. Also look for the AHSFHS Championship Game Previews were we give you stats and numbers for each game.

   *   Only two previously undefeated teams fell in the semifinals as Elba and B.B. Comer saw their unbeaten streaks come to a halt this week. The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - Central Phenix City (12-0)
       6A - Clay-Chalkville (13-0),  Saraland (14-0)
       5A - Gulf Shores (14-0)
       4A - Catholic Montgomery (14-0)
       3A - Madison Academy (14-0), Mobile Christian (14-0)
       2A - Reeltown (14-0)
       1A - Leroy (13-0)

   *   Upsets in the semifinals of the playoffs? Only a couple and really just one as Leroy (+13) scored late to defeat Elba 27-24. Madison Academy was considered a one point underdog to Geraldine but won the game 48-45. Both of these games came down to the final play.

   *    Comeback wins? Leroy scored on a 23 yard pass from QB Brayden Huebner to Josh Reed with less than a minute remaining to defeat Elba 27-24. None were bigger than the last second field goal by Reeltown to defeat B.B. Comer 31-28. A field goal by Reeltown? They rarely attempt extra points but kicker Gaines Tapley managed to bounce one off the right goalpost for the victory.

   *   Close Games? Madison Academy running back Ken Cherry scored on an 11 yard run with just 57 seconds remaining to defeat Geraldine 48-43 in a wild one up north.

   *   Statement wins? How about Cherokee County blasting Westminster Christian 50-6 or Gulf Shores shutting out Eufaula 45-0 or possibly Saraland dumping Pike Road 46-7. Also included in this list is Catholic Montgomery's 28-0 shutout of B.T. Washington. These four teams gave their opponents no hope from the opening whistle.

   *  Ok. Let's put this in perspective. Since the beginning of the 2014 football season Fyffe has a record of 138-6. About as good as it gets. So they have lost six games over the course of the past ten football seasons. They have as many state championships as losses at six. Every year the stats for Coach Benefield and Fyffe become more impressive.

   *   Records? Alvin Henderson ran for 302 yards and scored 3 TDs but Elba fell to Leroy 27-24. Henderson sits alone at the top of the list for most touchdowns scored in a season with 61.

   *   Gulf Shores and Coosa Christian won a semifinal playoff game for the first time in their school's history. It will be their first trip to the championship game.

   *   Leroy, Fyffe, Cherokee County, Ramsay, Saraland and Thompson are all making return trips to the Super 7 this week. All but Cherokee County won a title in 2022.

   *   Teams who have not reached the finals in a while include; Madison Academy 2016, Mobile Christian 2019 and Reeltown 2019.

   *   Teams who have never won an AHSAA championship game include: Coosa Christian, Mobile Christian, Catholic Montgomery and Gulf Shores.

   *   The battle of unbeaten teams; Saraland (14-0) vs. Clay-Chalkville (13-0) and Madison Academy (14-0) vs. Mobile Christian (14-0).

   *   There are nine remaining undefeated teams. The most undefeated teams in any season to win a championships is four. That has happened on ten different occasions most recently in 2020.

   *   Something that is very rare is the fact that every team in the finals is a #1 seed except Coosa Christian. And they should have been but for some forfeited games early in the season.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the finals along with their all-time record. Ramsay 2-0, Leroy 6-2, Thompson 5-1, Clay-Chalkville 3-1 and Fyffe 8-2.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow. We will cover all the Super Seven matchups for each classification.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last twenty games following a 46-7 win over Pike Road in the emsifinals of the playoffs.

   *   Saraland has won 25 consecutive home games.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 23 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe continues to dominate Class 2A as they have for the last ten seasons. The Red Devils are currently sitting on a string of 320 games without being shutout.
