Week Eleven Tidbits & Records

Region Champions are crowned and the playoffs are set. Now onto the post season. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode. We will go over all the playoff scenarios for each and every region in the AHSAA. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 10-2 predicting the games.

   *   All the official playoff brackets are posted. Let the fun begin. Win and keep playing the next week. We will post a special 'Tidbits and Records' tomorrow for the end of the regular season and a look at some stats for the playoffs.

   *   Monday we will unveil the latest AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our Top Ten in each classification. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *   Once again we begin each week with the offenses and high scoring games and we had a few this week. Eight teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by Russell County outscoring Greenville 75-43. One note here is that 39 teams set a school record this year so far for most points allowed in a season. Think there are more points scored in the games this year?

   *   Upsets? The biggest upset according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings was Fort Payne defeating Cherokee County 21-14 after entering the game as a 20 point underdog. Cleburne County defeated Walter Wellborn after being a pregame 19 point underdog. Overall the Power Ratings predicted 118 of 142 games correctly this week for a winning percentage of 83.1%. Fourteen of the losses were in games where the winner was an underdog by less than seven points.

   *    Comeback wins? Baker fell behind 21-7 before scoring 24 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Mount Brook 37-28.

   *   Close Games? St. Paul's led Theodore 3-0 with four minutes remaining in the game before four touchdowns were scored and Theodore walked away with a 20-10 victory. St. James squeaked by Carroll 49-48 on a two-point conversion in overtime. Springville escaped Pell City in overtime by a score of 31-28. Opp survived Ashford 50-48 in three overtimes to qualify for the playoffs.

   *   Statement wins? Madison Academy thumped Westminster Christian 47-7. Fyffe got by Sylvania 21-10. 4A Jackson ran away from 7A Davidson 45-14. Muscle Shoals exploded on Sparkman 48-7. Hartselle beat Athens 35-21.

   *   Gulf Shores (10-0) is off to the best start in their school's history as the Dolphins dropped B.C. Rain 43-21. Locust Fork completed the regular season 10-0. Central Clay County also finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time.

   *   Off to bad starts? D.A.R. and Huffman have never finished a season 0-10 until this year. Calera last started a season 0-10 in 1993.

   * If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow. We will go over all the playoff matchups for each classification.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 163 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last sixteen games following a 70-27 beat down of McGill-Toolen.

   *   Catholic Montgomery with a 34 game region winning streak leads all teams.

   *   The #1 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 34 straight regular season games.

   *   Saraland has won 21 consecutive home games and will host a first round playoff games against McAdory this week.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 22 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe continues to dominate Class 2A as they have for the last ten seasons. The Red Devils are currently sitting on a string of 316 games without being shutout.

   *   Hackleburg chalked up the 500th win in program history as the Panthers defeated Cherokee 41-6 this week. Their overall record since 1925 is 500-438-29 according to the research completed by AHSFHS.org.

   *   Ernie Willingham at Collinsville won the 150th game of his 22 year career at Collinsville and Appalachian. His record is 150-96 since 1998. Congratulations Coach.

   *   Rod Hudson, the head football coach at Hackleburg, tied John Hardin for the most victories at the school last week with a 41-6 victory over Cherokee. Coach Hudson has a record of 118-55 in 15 seasons leading the Panther's football program.

   *   Dustan Goode with 80 wins at Mortimer Jordan surpasses Greg Watts for the most victories at the school. The Blue Devils beat Fultondale 14-13 last week.

* Helena set a team record in a loss 44-0 to Vestavia Hills breaking the previous record set when they lost to St. Pauls 57-14 on 11/7/2014.

* Pleasant Home set a team record in a loss 61-0 to Georgiana tying the previous record set when they lost to Florala 68-7 on 10/8/2020.

* Brindlee Mountain set a team record in a loss 61-42 to Gaston breaking the previous record set in a loss to Fyffe 70-25 on 10/19/2007.

* Greenville set a team record in a loss 75-43 to Russell County breaking the previous record set when they defeated Paul Bryant 52-41 on 9/10/2010.

* Russell County set a team record in a 75-43 victory over Greenville breaking the previous record set in a loss to Beauregard 82-36 on 10/29/2015.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
